19.00 – 21.00 Opening Exhibition: HX – Pages from “Weltuntergang – a post-apocalyptic queer adventure” graphic novel
Set in Berlin after an extreme climate catastrophe, the upcoming graphic novel focuses on exploring community and group dynamics, and the challenges of survival from queer perspectives.
How does a community look like after a disaster? How do we survive together with limited resources? How do people move from place to place without a constant distribution of fossil fuels? The comic brings the political tensions of Northern Europe into focus in a carnivalesque way, and discusses issues important to queer communities: where to get vital medications, such as hormones, which are a requirement for life for many trans* people? How are gender and sexual norms changing as the post-apocalyptic society changes?
With quirky humour the graphic novel tackles current issues: the looming environmental crisis and the rise of the far-right violence in Northern Europe.
BIO: Henna Räsänen (HX) is a Berlin-based non-binary and queer comic artist whose work explores social norms through offbeat, prickly humor. Their comics depict subcultures and queer communities in a rapidly eroding world. In HX’s stories dark and troubled noir waltzes with urban topographies, tracking currents and illustrating utopias.
Their comics are mostly published in English language. In 2024 they worked as the Curator of the Comic Invasion Berlin Festival’s International Focus Exhibition at neurotitan gallery. They teach comic workshops that center on norm critical practices, the character of (urban) spaces and the attempt on finding hope in the middle of the current climate catastrophe.
