DESCRIPTION:18:00\nVegan Moroccan Food by Hafid\n***\n20:00\nPoppe & Nemeth presenteren\nHIPPIES FROM HELL\ndocumentaire van Ine Poppe en Sam Nemeth uit 2001 \n  \n \nStart 20:00 / 53 min. \nIne Poppe en Sam Nemeth tonen op hun eerste Dokavond (de tweede is donderdag 9 februari) de gerestaureerde versie van de legendarische documentaire Hippies from Hell uit 2001. De film is een portret van de gemeenschap achter Nederlands’ eerste echte internetprovider XS4all. Uitgebreid komt de generatie hackers aan het woord die het blad Hacktic publiceerde. De subcultuur is rond 2000\, toen de film werd gedraaid\, net aan het eerste moment van reflectie toe. De roerige eerste decennia van de digitale revolutie zijn achter de rug en er wordt door een aantal mensen de balans opgemaakt. De documentaire werkt toe naar het hackerfestival HAL (Hackers at Large) in 2001\, waar alle draadjes bij elkaar komen. \nHippies from Hell beleeft na de presentatie op het IDFA in 2002 een opmerkelijke geschiedenis. Opdrachtgever VPRO wil hem aanvankelijk om onopgehelderde redenen niet uitzenden. Daarna eist Ine in de onderhandelingen die erop volgen het auteursrecht op. De VPRO gaat daar uiteindelijk mee akkoord. Vervolgens wordt HFH de eerste Europese film die officieel een Creative Commons licentie krijgt\, persoonlijk door CC initiatiefnemer Lawrence Lessig uitgereikt. De VPRO organiseert rond 2010 een digitale docu-reeks en wil dan alsnog HFH uitzenden (maar moet dan betalen voor het uitzenden van hun eigen productie). \nHippies from Hell is in de beginjaren via de server van de Waag downloadbaar geweest en in die vorm rond de 2 miljoen keer bekeken. Daarna is de documentaire op diverse manieren gepirateerd\, ondanks de CC licentie. Nog in 2022 moesten we Journeyman film -tevergeefs- sommeren de film niet meer te verkopen onder de naam Hackers from Hell via Amazon. Journeyman doet dat nog steeds\, in de US\, waar ze voor het Europees recht lastig te bereiken zijn. \nThe exhibition Landschapslijnen is on display till February 2nd 2023.

DESCRIPTION:We’re happy to welcome back Julia Reidy and Frö for a night of sci-fi folk music. \nCritics have described Julia Reidy‘s music as “properly singular\,” blending “immense knowledge of American primitive folk music with microtonal experimentalism and abstract pop vocalizing.” Reidy’s work has been compared to a range artists\, from Hope Sandoval and Talk Talk to Jim O’Rourke and Tashi Wada Group\, while ultimately remaining distinct. Frö makes experimental electronics with haunting vocals\, “going from femme-folk to post-internet information-overload.” Her fascination lies in the voice as the body’s given instrument\, one we always carry with us.  Join us for this special show at Dokzaal\, MOLK Factory on February 3rd. \n  \nTickets are free for Subbacultcha members and €15\,- for non-members. Norman White\, een van oorsprong Amerikaanse kunstenaar die al sinds de seventies vanuit Toronto opereert was een van de pioniers van wat hij zelf ‘robot-kunst’ noemt. \nWhite gaf naast zijn kunstpraktijk tot 2016 les aan Radio Television Arts Department of Ryerson University\, Toronto\, Ontario \nThem Fucking Robots graaft in White’s geschiedenis en laat diverse collega-kunstenaars en kunsthistorici aan het woord. We zien Norman White uitgebreid in zijn werkplaats in Durham\, Ontario. Ook spreken de makers met kunstenaars die hij les heeft gegeven of door hem beïnvloed zijn. \nThem Fucking Robots is een indringend project van een onafhankelijke geest die een generatie kunstenaars opleidde die inmiddels overal op de wereld hun invloed laten gelden.

Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n  \n \nCAIRO STATION 1958\n(باب الحديد )\nDirected by Youssef Chahine\n77 minutes\nIn Arabic with English subtitles \n  \nWhen this movie was made it opened up what was possible in Egyptian cinema. The kinds of movies made in Egypt during this period were mostly light\, upbeat romantic comedies. This film showed another side of Egypt and humanity in general… a dark sensual side that almost embodies a kind of madness. This flick is certainly about eroticism\, but is also about the perilous predicament of any outcast\, anyone excluded from society. It is also a snapshot of Egypt going through massive social change\, with Egyptian rock n’ roll entering the picture at one point\, along with feminist gangs demonstrating before news reporters. \nThe story is about many different characters at the teeming Cairo train station… but at the same time it focuses on the lives of several key players. The main one is a poverty-stricken newspaper seller named Qenawi who lives in a ramshackle shack/hut. This guy has gone a bit nuts\, and surprisingly is played by the director himself in a totally lunatic performance. Director Chahine has a wicked ability to enter human psychology\, with the sharpness of a scalpel. I have personally become skeptical whenever someone talks about ‘human nature’ as if it can be totally separated from the society and culture it developed in. I’m not sure\, but it seems to me Chahine came to the same conclusion. \nThe dazzling visuals of the film is a beautiful fusion of neo-realism and film noir. The mood is mostly bright\, but can suddenly switch on a dime\, without any expectation\, from light to dark and vice versa. It is a film that documents how the poor survive\, forced into petty crime and always being chased by the police… but it also emerges as a cutting edge thriller about repression in general—not only of the lower classes\, but also the repression of sexuality\, and of women through male violence. \n\n\n\nStart 20:30\nFree screening

Thursday February 23rd we invite everyone to our first 𝕭𝖗𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖞𝖔𝖚𝖗 𝖔𝖜𝖓 𝖒𝖚𝖘𝖎𝖈 𝖒𝖚𝖘𝖎𝖈 𝖓𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙 at the Plantage Dok café to sing along. The bar is our stage and everyone is a performer. Everyone and everything is welcome! All musical styles\, all instruments\, all languages. No auditions\, no judgements\, only fun.
