SUMMARY:Dokhuis Night - ASEED Benefit dinner
DESCRIPTION:What yummy scents fill this warm spring-air? \nCan it be? \nIs it true? \nYes it is! ASEED is organizing another benefit dinner. \n  \nJoin us on the 5th of May from 7pm onwards at the Dokcafé to fill your bellies with delicious treats. You do not need to reserve a spot but places are limited\, so make sure you show up not too late! \nThis time the earnings will go to the organization of the yearly Food Autonomy Festival (FAF)\, that willl be happening from the 27th-29th of May in Amsterdam and Utrecht. The FAF is a festival organized by ASEED\, where we collectively discuss and celebrate alternatives and resistance to the state and the corporate-controlled industrial food system. It is a place where activists\, farmers\, young academics\, food-lovers among many others who fight together for social and ecological justice are brought together. In doing so\, we strive in both our perspectives and practices\, to challenge racism\, sexism\, coloniality\, and oppression in all its forms. Collectively we take engagement with food beyond procurement and make it a site of resistance\, solidarity and autonomy. \nAt the dinner you will have the opportunity to learn a bit more about the Food Autonomy Festival and ask us all your questions 🙂 \nCome enjoy good food\, good vibes\, and make the FAF possible! \nTo make this solidarity dinner happen\, we are looking for volunteers who can help us with various tasks such as setting up\, cooking\, serving and cleaning at the end of the night. \nAre you interested in volunteering? \nLet us know in this form so we can ad you to the volunteering schedule: https://form.jotform.com/221082318967359. \nFood\, drinks and good vibes will be provided! For any further information contact paulina@aseed.net or justine@aseed.net. \nSee you on the 5th! \nLove and Rage\, \nThe ASEED collective \nps. Suggested donation: 7 euros.  Please bring your donations in cash 🙂

SUMMARY:Filmavond\, films for those who care | Working girls
DESCRIPTION:SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\nFilms for Those Who Care \nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock \n\n\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n \nWORKING GIRLS  1986\nDirected by Lizzie Borden\n93 minutes\nIn English \nDirector Lizzie Borden was a unique one. At the very beginning of her career she knocked out two of the most confronting movies of the 1980s in America. Both were done on low-budgets\, but took an unusually fierce stance on the topics they chose to deal with. The first film was the punk-socialist Born in Flames\, which detailed a women’s guerrilla revolution in Manhattan\, and the second ground-breaking film was this one\, Working Girls. \nThis is an un-erotic film about sex. In other words it is about sex as a trade\, the world of female sex workers. It depicts one day in the lives of three women—Molly and Dawn are workers\, Lucy is the madame— all working in a modern apartment-brothel (escort service). All three women are there for different reasons (but all financial) and each handles the work in different ways. One is even a lesbian\, and has to divorce her personal life from her business. What is crucial is that in this film we see a view of an escort service that is totally unrecognizable from the stereotype in any mainstream movie. It’s this brutal clash in how the situation is depicted that makes this such a valuable experience. \nDirector Borden did a lot of research on the brothel scene in New York City\, and what she learned gives this flick many insights. Like I said before\, there is not much sensuality here for the audience to experience\, only the grind of unsavory work along with the boredom of killing a lot of time\, waiting for the phone to ring. The actual sex scenes with the clients are not meant to be titillating or to seduce us in any way. They are set to a cold electronic music score by David Van Tieghem\, keeping us\, in a sense\, at arm’s length. And although I make the movie sound like it is one sided—women vs the clients—actually it is much more complex and nuanced. For instance\, one of the sex workers almost sees her work as a kind of therapy session for the men that visit her. \nThe film raises many questions\, such as: who is exploiting who the most… the clients who use the service\, or the women who cynically want to drain the rich bastards of their cash? And what about the madame that runs the joint? Or you can also step back even further and see the society we live in as a cat-and-mouse game where everyone is exploiting each other. And yet\, despite it all\, there are glimpses of something else in the narrative… moments of solidarity and caring. \n“A modern classic uncompromisingly lensed through a female viewpoint.” \n  \nThis will be a high-definition screening. \nFree screening.

SUMMARY:Filmavond\, films for those who care | CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER
\n\n  \nCHRONICLE OF A SUMMER   1961\n(Chronique d’un été)\nDirected by Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin\n85 minutes\nIn French with English subtitles \n\n\nThis is one of the most important films in the history of cinema\, and one that is rarely ever shown in cinemas these days. Ethnographer Jean Rouch is famous for his anthropological films about African culture\, and was a pioneer in creating a new kind of documentary cinema in which he made films with the participation of his subjects (rather than judging them from afar). His groundbreaking movies (called ‘shared anthropology’) were heralded by the French New Wave because he found a way to make cinema real again\, and you can see his huge impact on their New Wave cinema. \nSo in 1960 anthropologist Rouch collaborated with sociologist Edgar Morin on an experiment. Instead of making so-called “ethnographic” films about people in faraway lands like Africa or Asia\, they decided to turn the camera on their own culture for a change. Using a newly available 16mm camera\, they set out to do what no one else had done before—to go out into the streets of Paris and attempt to capture daily life and discuss it. They felt they needed a theme to focus the project\, so they simply asked people if they were happy. The result is shattering\, both cinematically and emotionally. Souls are revealed in a way that no fake dramatic acting could ever come close to…. piercing and moving\, even more so because it’s so real and unscripted. \nAs one viewer said “watch it and be blown away.”  Once again\, cinema these days has fallen into a narrow rut… we need fresh ideas that can spark new directions of filmmaking—and this movie does exactly that. It both expands the imagination\, and grounds us in real life at the same time. \nThis will be a high-definition screening. \n\n\n21:00\nFree screening

SUMMARY:Filmavond\, films for those who care | Ici et ailleurs
\n\n  \n \nICI ET AILLEURS  1976 \nDirected by Jean-Luc Godard\, Anne-Marie Miéville and Jean-Pierre Gorin\n55 minutes\nIn French with English subtitles \nThis is Jean-Luc Godard\, Anne-Marie Melville and Jean-Pierre Gorin’s radical cinematic adventure that focuses on the state of life within the Palestinian camps (elsewhere) and how it is seen by people in the West (here). But\, typical of Godard\, the film is also self-reflexive\, and is thus transformed into an acute examination of the nature of cinema itself and how it works. \nGodard started off as an ‘auteur’ filmmaker\, believing in the singular vision of the artist\, but this idea evolved in the late 1960s\, and he began to embrace the possibilities of the collective. This is a wonderful example of his collaborative work—it was a period of questioning all presumptions of cinema\, and reinventing it from the ground up. New thoughts\, new aesthetics and a new spirit. \nThis will be a high-definition screening. \nAND \n  \n \nJLG/JLG – SELF PORTRAIT IN DECEMBER  1994 \n(JLG/JLG – autoportrait de décembre)\nDirected by Jean-Luc Godard\n54 minutes\nIn French with English subtitles \nThis is Godard’s ‘self portrait’ which shouldn’t be confused with an autobiography. This poetic film reflects how Godard feels about several subjects\, which include death and cinema…things that are closer to his soul than biographical details ever could be. Therefore Godard does not recount the story of his life\, but instead he uses film to present himself the way a painter would in a self-portrait…. by making a collage of his thoughts\, loves and fears. \nAlthough he doesn’t bring out any biographical information\, he does refer to his earlier films in the haunting images of JLG/JLG. As in many of Godard’s later films\, the dialogue and voice-overs create a poetic montage of overlapping images and quotations from works of literature\, science\, and philosophy. Godard takes these quotations and montages them into visual passages based on themes of art\, film\, and politics. Godard is cinema’s great mixer\, and with his usual technique\, he weaves together bits of music\, images\, spoken words\, audio clips and his own voice narration tying everything together (or pulling everything apart). \nMuch of JLG/JLG was shot at his house in the Swiss town of Rolle\, on Lake Geneva\, which was the place where he finally died. Other sequences were shot outside his home\, set in the region’s wintry lakes and forests. This provides a beautiful setting for the film’s episodes and Godard’s autumnal reflections on art\, life and cinema. Godard died with euthanasia\, a willed clear-cut decision\, like everything else in his life. \n\n\n\nPlantage Doklaan 8-12\n20:30\nFree screening

SUMMARY:Dokhuis NIGHT - GO GO TRASH
DESCRIPTION:Berlin based Gogo Trash is a colorful collective of free-thinking artists\, that makes art in multiple disciplines\, inspired by waste. They love to collect all kinds of (mostly plastic) garbage and upcycle this into unusual\, eye catching and extreme costumes\, wigs\, decorations and other trash products. \nDressed up in their art work\, they give unique performances where each member changes into a new and different character\, hardly recognizable anymore\, because of the alienating and comical effects of their plastic costumes. \nThe group improvises on different themes and situations\, often related to overconsumption\, pollution\, but also social political themes. \nhttp://gogotrash.de/

SUMMARY:Dokhuis NIGHT | Vegan Confort Food & Symbiopsychotaxicinema
DESCRIPTION:19:00 Vegan Comfort Food bij JuJu\n20:30 Symbiopsychotaxicinema presents Jonas will be 25 in the year 2000\n\n\n***\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\nFilms for Those Who Care\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock \n\n\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. \n\n \nJONAS  WILL BE 25 IN THE YEAR 2000   (1976) \n(Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l’an 2000)\nDirected by Alain Tanner\n116 minutes\nIn French with English subtitles \nThere are a few films which for me are almost like good friends. Films that few other people know about\, but which I have seen dozens of times\, and which warm my heart and inspire me creatively every time I see them. Jonas is one of those rare films. When it was released\, Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l’an 2000 was the most successful Swiss film ever made\, with over two million viewers worldwide. But since then\, it’s been totally deleted from film history\, as has been the director. \nSwiss director Alain Tanner conjured up this sublime treasure along with the great British writer John Berger. This film looks at the lives of eight people after the collapse of the May revolution of Paris in 1968. It elegantly captures the zeitgeist of 1975\, seen through individual lives of some Genevans who\, in minor ways\, attempt to keep the spark of rebellion and collectively alive as their dreams from 1968 fade away\, facing the cold-blooded reality of the 1970s. It specifically revolves around the principle question: how does one stay true to one’s dreams and still survive in a world without dreams? This film opens up a whole bag of questions about how our world functions and how society deals with the creative process. \nRich with thoughtful conversations and insights\, Tanner’s films are a blend of documentary and fable. The musical score by Jean-Marie Senia is exquisite and considered by some to be one of the finest scores written for cinema. It’s been said that this film combines the political commitment of Godard with the humanistic naturalism of Jean Renoir. \nWith the sound and fury of Hollywood blockbusters raging in the background\, what a relief to know that small gems of cinema like this were ever made. But that makes the crime that they are NEVER shown even worse! In the current state of affairs\, this film is more relevant today than ever…. and it’s such a treat to watch a film where people have real conversations about real things\, rather than dialogue written because of some absurd plot. Starring one of my favorite actresses\, Miou-Miou (Les valseuses). \nLet’s face it…. the world is in a mess. Maybe it’s time to get back to relevant cinema again. \nFree screening.

SUMMARY:Anarchistische boekenbeurs Amsterdam
\nanarchistbookfairamsterdam@riseup.net\nwww.vrijebond.org/anarchistische-boekenbeurs-amsterdam-3\nanarchistbookfairamsterdam.blackblogs.org
