SUMMARY:Dokhuis NIGHT - Dok For Peace
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a fundraising dinner and screening. All proceeds go to Ukrainian refugees of non-European origin (BIPOC).Axe and Porridge will cook a traditional Ukrainian three-course dinner.\nSuggested donation €20 (or more)\n\n\n——–\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\n\n\nFilms for Those Who Care \nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock \nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n\n\n\nBLACK IS… BLACK AIN’T  1994Directed by Marlon Riggs87 minutesIn english \nLet’s deep dive into the confronting cinema of Marlon Riggs—a black queer filmmaker who died from Aids-related complications at the tender age of 37. In some ways\, he can be seen as the flipside of the cinematic coin shared with British director Derek Jarman. Both directors were committed — to activism\, creativity and going against the grain. Briggs was always knocking out terribly sincere and frank documentaries\, in ways that were not only unique in theme\, but also in form. The films were inclusive\, but also disruptive to the status quo. I personally believe we are all individuals\, with radically different experiences\, and whenever we speak the truth it will always go against the generic stereotypes propagated by the media. That is why cinema like that of Marlon Riggs is so crucial. It tells the other side of the story that isn’t being told. \nThis flick was Marlon’s last\, and we even have passages of him lying in his hospital bed as he dies\, giving his last thoughts. This is a kind of essay-film\, flipping between personal reflections\, street interviews\, spoken poetry\, discussions\, folk stories\, archival material and music—grappling with many issues that unexpectedly conflict\, like Queerism\, black culture and feminism. On top of it all\, we get Angela Davis with her powerful observations\, along with Cornel West. In general\, there are two different groups of people—those that feel success comes from everyone jumping on the same bandwagon and gaining as many twitter followers as possible… and then there is the other idea of progress—bringing out the contradictions\, the problems\, and not glossing them over and pretend they don’t exist. Riggs clearly belongs to the latter\, and it makes his voice that much stronger because of it. His films are uncomfortable not because they are provocative\, but simply because they hit upon some hard truths that many try to avoid. \n  \n+ This will be a high-definition screening. \n+ Screening at 21:00

SUMMARY:Crystalline
DESCRIPTION:Helena Basilova & Jurjen Alkema\nPianiste Helena Basilova speelt muziek van Debussy tot Tanaka. I Children of Light- selection Water Dance I\,II\, III Techno Etudes I \n  \nHosted by 24classics.

SUMMARY:Benefiet Nicaragua: tasty meal and the rebellious music of singer-songwriter Jandir Rodríguez
DESCRIPTION:We are organizing this night in celebration and commemoration of the April 2018 protests in Nicaragua\, which were brutally repressed by state and paramilitary forces\, taking the lives of 328 people and leaving many more injured and in prison. It also pushed more than 150.000 people into exile. For this reason\, the night is organized by the Nicaraguan refugee community in the Netherlands\, in collaboration with SOSNicaragua-Holanda and the Dutch Solidarity with Nicaragua.\n\nThe dinner\, starting at 18.00\, is a “voku” – people’s kitchen – consisting of a series of typical Nicaraguan dishes like gallo pinto\, tostones\, adobo mushrooms and guiso (all vegetarian). There will also be tres leches and cajetas de coco for dessert.\n\nThe proceeds of the benefit dinner will support the families of political prisoners in need. If you want to be sure of a plate\, please sign up for dinner with an email to: sosnicaragua.holanda@gmail.com\n\nFollowing the dinner\, at 20.00\, Nicaraguan singer-songwriter Jandir Rodríguez\, who is on tour to promote his second album “Volar”\, will take the floor to sweep you away to warmer places  There will be plenty of time to socialize and maybe even dance a bit! You can also see caricatures by exiled cartoonist Pedro X. Molina and add to the collage of dedications to Nicaragua set up downstairs.\n\nWe hope to see you all at Dokhuis on Saturday 16 April!\n\n\n–\nProgram: Doors open from 17.00 | Dinner from 18.00 | Concert & Music from 20.00\nPrice: donation € 5\,- or more!\n–\nNOTE: park your bikes in the bike spots\, and never in front of the neighboor’s buildings. Keep sidewalks free\, keep quiet outside. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Filmavond\, films for those who care | Blue Collar
DESCRIPTION:SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\nFilms for Those Who Care \nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock \n\n\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. \n  \n\n \nBLUE COLLAR   1978\nDirected by Paul Schrader\n114 minutes\nIn English with English subtitles \nDamn\, they don’t make films like this anymore\, that’s for sure! After Paul Schrader wrote loads of screenplays for other directors like Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver) he decided to direct one of his own scripts himself. His choice was this one\, BLUE COLLAR…. and so with a great cast including Richard Pryor\, Harvey Keitel (Bad Lieutenant)\, and Yaphet Koto (Alien) and a volatile script\, he created this explosive gem of a film which is one of the most underrated films from the 70s. \nThe film is about three drinking buddies who all work in a Detroit car factory. Pissed off about their worker’s union which they feel never does anything for them\, one night they decide to rob the union’s safe. That’s the set-up for a film that hooks you in right from the great opening credit sequence and doesn’t let go until the final freeze-frame. This hilarious and tragic film was one of the last films made in Hollywood that depicted the reality of everyday people without all of the gloss\, make-up and special effects. \nBlue Collar has had a huge impact upon other filmmakers\, but has been rarely screened in cinemas since it was made. For example\, the whole interracial interaction between black and white people in this film seems to have been directly ripped off by Tarantino as a standard template for films like Pulp Fiction. And by the way\, as if all that wasn’t enough\, it also has a brilliant soundtrack featuring Captain Beefheart and Howlin’ Wolf. It’s still relevant and powerful thirty years after it was made….a lost masterpiece of engaged cinema. A dynamite film with riveting plot…. it’s a rare screening and it’s for free… what more could you ask for? \nThis will be a high-definition screening. \nFree screening.

SUMMARY:Dokhuis Night - ASEED Benefit dinner
DESCRIPTION:What yummy scents fill this warm spring-air? \nCan it be? \nIs it true? \nYes it is! ASEED is organizing another benefit dinner. \n  \nJoin us on the 5th of May from 7pm onwards at the Dokcafé to fill your bellies with delicious treats. You do not need to reserve a spot but places are limited\, so make sure you show up not too late! \nThis time the earnings will go to the organization of the yearly Food Autonomy Festival (FAF)\, that willl be happening from the 27th-29th of May in Amsterdam and Utrecht. The FAF is a festival organized by ASEED\, where we collectively discuss and celebrate alternatives and resistance to the state and the corporate-controlled industrial food system. It is a place where activists\, farmers\, young academics\, food-lovers among many others who fight together for social and ecological justice are brought together. In doing so\, we strive in both our perspectives and practices\, to challenge racism\, sexism\, coloniality\, and oppression in all its forms. Collectively we take engagement with food beyond procurement and make it a site of resistance\, solidarity and autonomy. \nAt the dinner you will have the opportunity to learn a bit more about the Food Autonomy Festival and ask us all your questions 🙂 \nCome enjoy good food\, good vibes\, and make the FAF possible! \nTo make this solidarity dinner happen\, we are looking for volunteers who can help us with various tasks such as setting up\, cooking\, serving and cleaning at the end of the night. \nAre you interested in volunteering? \nLet us know in this form so we can ad you to the volunteering schedule: https://form.jotform.com/221082318967359. \nFood\, drinks and good vibes will be provided! For any further information contact paulina@aseed.net or justine@aseed.net. \nSee you on the 5th! \nLove and Rage\, \nThe ASEED collective \nps. Suggested donation: 7 euros.  Please bring your donations in cash 🙂

SUMMARY:Filmavond\, films for those who care | Working girls
DESCRIPTION:SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\nFilms for Those Who Care \nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock \n\n\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. \n \nWORKING GIRLS  1986\nDirected by Lizzie Borden\n93 minutes\nIn English \nDirector Lizzie Borden was a unique one. At the very beginning of her career she knocked out two of the most confronting movies of the 1980s in America. Both were done on low-budgets\, but took an unusually fierce stance on the topics they chose to deal with. The first film was the punk-socialist Born in Flames\, which detailed a women’s guerrilla revolution in Manhattan\, and the second ground-breaking film was this one\, Working Girls. \nThis is an un-erotic film about sex. In other words it is about sex as a trade\, the world of female sex workers. It depicts one day in the lives of three women—Molly and Dawn are workers\, Lucy is the madame— all working in a modern apartment-brothel (escort service). All three women are there for different reasons (but all financial) and each handles the work in different ways. One is even a lesbian\, and has to divorce her personal life from her business. What is crucial is that in this film we see a view of an escort service that is totally unrecognizable from the stereotype in any mainstream movie. It’s this brutal clash in how the situation is depicted that makes this such a valuable experience. \nDirector Borden did a lot of research on the brothel scene in New York City\, and what she learned gives this flick many insights. Like I said before\, there is not much sensuality here for the audience to experience\, only the grind of unsavory work along with the boredom of killing a lot of time\, waiting for the phone to ring. The actual sex scenes with the clients are not meant to be titillating or to seduce us in any way. They are set to a cold electronic music score by David Van Tieghem\, keeping us\, in a sense\, at arm’s length. And although I make the movie sound like it is one sided—women vs the clients—actually it is much more complex and nuanced. For instance\, one of the sex workers almost sees her work as a kind of therapy session for the men that visit her. \nThe film raises many questions\, such as: who is exploiting who the most… the clients who use the service\, or the women who cynically want to drain the rich bastards of their cash? And what about the madame that runs the joint? Or you can also step back even further and see the society we live in as a cat-and-mouse game where everyone is exploiting each other. And yet\, despite it all\, there are glimpses of something else in the narrative… moments of solidarity and caring. \n“A modern classic uncompromisingly lensed through a female viewpoint.” \n  \nThis will be a high-definition screening. \nFree screening.
