SUMMARY:Dok Night / SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA / PANEL STORY  (1980) Directed by Vera Chytilová
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday there’s a Vegan Dinner accompanying an exhibition opening/closing\, a live performance\, live music\, movie screening or …\nCome meet other people interested in art and activism\, good food and great prices. Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar. \nPANEL STORY  1980\n(Panelstory aneb Jak se rodí sídliste)\n\nDirected by Vera Chytilová\n96 minutes\nIn Czech with English subtitles \n \n\nThe bold films of Czechoslovakian director Vera Chytilová (Daisies) are still largely deleted from film history at this moment. Women are generally marginalized if not downright ignored from the official film history books. Like female directors Lina Wertmüller\, Liliana Cavani and Agnes Varda\, Chytilová’s career shows an incredible wealth—her films are visionary and uncompromising. Her name is finally getting on the map a bit after all these years\, but whenever a Chytilová film is shown today it’s still always the same one\, over and over. Crazy. This flick is a black comedy that was banned for years\, and still has never really been given a chance. \nVera Chytilová was a rebel who reflected the surreal changes that Czechoslovakia was going through in the 60s and 70s. Panel Story is an incredible encapsulation of the attempted modernist project taking place in the suburbs outside of Prague in the 70s… a creation that was actually a destruction… a dream that was a nightmare. The flats were conceived of as bright and modern solutions to a housing crisis\, ready to be equipped with all the latest domestic appliances – but the result was a domestic hell promoting mind-numbing standardization. The mass-produced housing estates of efficient prefabricated high-rises were both a striving for paradise\, and an expulsion from paradise at the same time. \nThis film probably only rivals Jean-Luc Godard’s 2 or 3 Things I Know about Her in its abrasive criticism of our Brave New World. This is real psycho-filmmaking\, with deliberately chaotic editing\, an atonal music score and sudden frantic camera movements that feel like the cameraman was a rat being flushed down a toilet. Chytilová’s use of space is compressed and claustrophobic\, and the structure of the film is a rapid-fire flipping through the tenant’s households\, almost as if we are jumping through channels on a television with a remote control. The images are taut and overbearing\, the sound-design is compressed and autistic. Throughout the mess we do manage to follow the paths of several people’s lives… in a fragmented\, scattered way. \nIncendiary cinema\, created by a brave soul… one of Czechoslovakia’s greatest… \n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree screening\nDinners are available from 19:00

SUMMARY:Documentary 'From Compassion to Crime'

SUMMARY:Dok Night / PUNISHMENT PARK (1971) Directed by Peter Watkins
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday there’s a Vegan Dinner accompanying an exhibition opening/closing\, a live performance\, live music\, movie screening or …\nCome meet other people interested in art and activism\, good food and great prices. Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar. \nPUNISHMENT PARK (1971) \nDirected by Peter Watkins\n88 minutes\nIn English \n \nPeter Watkins is one of the most important filmmakers still living….he stands right up there with Godard in creating his own vision of cinema and social responsibility. And also like many visionaries Watkins has mostly been criticized for making absurd claims\, only to find out a few years later that everything he said was true. \nPUNISHMENT PARK is Watkins view of America in the early 70s. He considered it a sort of science fiction film set in the near future\, and actually its parallels with Guantanamo Bay are chilling. This film is about the construction of “punishment parks” in the deserts where all undesirables are being held. Watkins’ films tend to be banned in the country he makes them in\, and it was also true of this film which was banned as being un-american. Made with a cast of unprofessional actors\, who contributed in the creation of the piece\, this is an example of spontaneous filmmaking at its most intelligent…. a pseudo-documentary which has absolutely astounding results. The film remains one of the most controversial\, most searing films in the history of cinema. \nAnd\, hey\, guess what…. when Obama was in office he signed the National Defense Authorization Act\, which means that now anyone in America can now suddenly be taken away\, without charge\, without a lawyer\, without trial and imprisoned/tortured indefinitely. Yep\, we are certainly living in Science fiction these days. \nOne recent viewer’s response: \n“To think this film was made the year I was born. To think people are still having their constitutional rights taken away\, now in the name of “homeland security”. To think this movie was intentionally banned from the American public. PUNISHMENT PARK addresses the political divide in the United States better than any movie I’ve ever seen. A movie like this is so polarizing\, it has the potential to cause riots. It makes you face the issue: are you for the people’s right of dissent in a time of war\, or for the constitution being compromised in the name of “national security”? The acting is totally convincing. So much so\, I can’t see any acting going on here at all. If this is a scripted documentary\, it’s more convincing than any reality show on television today. PUNISHMENT PARK is possibly the most important film ever made.” \n\n\n20:30\nFree screening\nDinners are available from 19:00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. SUMMARY:Dok Night - SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA: THE LEGEND OF SURAM FORTRESS  (1985) Directed by Sergei Parajanov and Dodo Abashidze

Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar.\n18u Open\n19u Vegan Food\n20u30 SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\nTHE LEGEND OF SURAM FORTRESS  1985\n(ამბავი სურამის ციხისა)\nDirected by Sergei Parajanov and Dodo Abashidze\n88 minutes\nIn Georgian with English subtitles \nDespite the fact that Sergei Parajanov was one of the most internationally acclaimed directors of all time\, his films are rarely shown today. We projected his classic The Color of Pomegranates (Sayat Nova) several years ago\, and the audience was blown away. His movies are ravishing visual tapestries\, bordering on the psychedelic\, leading you to places you have never been\, stirring up feelings you never had before. And this film in particular—Suram Fortress—has a wild\, eclectic\, soul-jarring musical soundtrack. His movies are almost like moving paintings\, and their stories unravel in a state of pure ecstasy. \nThis film is based on an old Georgian folk tale about a fortress that is under constant construction. Whenever they get close to finishing it\, something gives way and it crumbles. Frustrated by this mystery\, the King’s servants go to a fortune-teller\, who reveals that a young boy must be walled up alive in one corner of the building\, so that the fortress will stand strong. Parajanov made this movie after he was released from a Soviet prison\, so perhaps the theme of this flick resonated with his own sacrifice of imprisonment. \nHe was 60 years old\, had spent much of his life behind bars\, and it’s incredible that after such a long dark journey\, he could still make a film as unbearably bright as this. This is pure art\, untouched by politics or business. It is one part ethnographic folk tale\, and one part surreal cinematic poem. Parajanov was an artistic compatriot of Andrei Tarkovsky\, and he remains one of most visionary and magical filmmakers who ever lived. \n\n\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. SUMMARY:Oog om oog\, kindertheater voorstelling
SUMMARY:Dok Night _ SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA _ CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS 1966 (Ostre sledované vlaky)
DESCRIPTION:CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS   1966\n(Ostre sledované vlaky) \n\nDirected by Jiří Menzel\n93 minutes\nIn Czech with English subtitles \nWinner of the Academy award for Best Foreign film in 1967\, this is one of the most charming and beautiful films in the history of cinema. Made in that small gap of freedom before the Russian tanks came into Prague in 68\, this film captures perfectly the spirit of the times. \nJiří Menzel’s funny\, tragic 1966 film\, set during the 1940’s in Czechoslovakia is a real piece of nostalgia. The scene is during World War II and the Nazis are officially in control\, and actively imposing their bureaucracy on the nation. Vaclav Neckar stars as a youth working at a village railway depot\, whose chief preoccupation is a desire for sexual adventure\, but who secondarily also sees the necessity of joining the Resistance movement. He spends most of his time doing as little work as possible\, avoiding the eye of his boss\, and flirting with the young female conductor of a passing train. The film has a nice mix of rural lethargy\, surreal hints\, poetic humor and exudes a vibrant sensuality. Finally\, there is something else: the shock of a confrontation between one’s dreams and a real-world obligation\, particularly in a world gone mad through no fault of one’s own. \nIt’s a real gem of the Czech New Wave movement\, and one that never gets tiring no matter how many times one sees it… it’s like playing your favorite record. And what’s more is it is able to tap into a kind of magic that no movie today can conjure up with all our so-called progress and high-tech prowess… in fact with every step we take ‘forward’ we are losing something essential. The key words to describe this movie are bittersweet and lyrical. \nOne viewer’s comment: “Closely Watched Trains is my favorite movie ever. It is 90 minutes of cinematic perfection: funny\, sad\, exquisitely shot\, beautiful to look at (watch it twice\, so that the second time around you can focus on Menzel’s genius in composing his shots)\, and insightful–profound\, even. Its structure will make any film student drool with envy. The acting is flawless. It’s just a beautiful work of art.” \n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The project spans acoustic\, dark folk\, and minimal styles\, with releases like Dagen Kommer that showcase contemplative songwriting and diverse instrumentation.\nhttps://lyngfarer.bandcamp.com/ \n —\nEvery Thursday there’s a Vegan Dinner accompanying an exhibition opening/closing\, a live performance\, live music\, movie screening or …\nCome meet other people interested in art and activism\, good food and great prices. SUMMARY:Dok Night - live music by GDVRDGDVR & Die Apokalyptischen Vier!
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday there’s a Vegan Dinner accompanying an exhibition opening/closing\, a live performance\, live music\, movie screening or …\nCome meet other people interested in art and activism\, good food and great prices. Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar.\n18u open\n19u Vegan Food\n20:30 live music in the basement by GDVRDGDVR & Die Apokalyptischen Vier!\nGDVRDGDVR is een losgeslagen folkduo dat haar akoestische gitaren heeft verruilt voor een basic drumkit en een distorted bass. Een nieuw album is in de maak\, as we speak.\nEen recensent verwoordde het treffend: “GDVRDGDVR sounds like it’s a duo of 18 year olds recording their first songs. This is all enthusiasm\, not holding back and not spending more that a split second on what someone else might find of what they are doing. On top of it all\, behind it all\, are the songs. The pop feel\, the harmonic prowess and the fun\, loads of it!”\n\n&\nDie Apokalyptischen Vier!
