SUMMARY:Tell Me More #2
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second edition of Tell Me More\, an evening of femmtronic music. During the evening we’ll feast on two audio visual shows by Show Pony & lowkolos in the Dokzaal and afterwards we’ll dance in the atmosphere cafe basement to the dark set of Warr and unrelenting performance of COW Shift Z. \nIn these dark times we are honored to host a very special performance Nobody’s Free Until Everybody’s Free\, an EP fundraiser for Gaza made by Mirthe van Popering X Honingbeer. Osama Hussein\, a Palestinian visual artist from Gaza\, created the cover art. You will be able to contribute directly at the venue by pin or cash. \nIn the spirit of the solstice we’ve opened our TMM coven to two up and coming male electronic music artists who will present Amsterdam premiers of their new works. lowkolos presents his hypnotic A/V show ‘there is no harmny’ and Warr a new live set of new music. \nAs always come and ask the artists and questions\, ask them to tell you more about their work or just come have a drink\, have a wiggle\, and enjoy the shows. \nTickets:Early bird: 10\,-Regular: 15\,-Student: 5\,- (must have valid ID)Limited amount of free tickets for Subbacultcha members. More info via Subbacultcha\nBuy tickets  online here!\n \n≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈ \nARTISTSCOW Shift Z (PT/NL) is a composer and performer of electronic music. Her practice focuses on integrating different music genres in her artistic language. Electronic dance music gives her the common ground to express her inner worlds and tell the stories with a free and experimental mindset. \nAs a performer  she is interested in rhythm and groove puzzled with aggressive\, industrial sounds. She is a creative programmer exploring new instruments that let her improvise with her own sound design and music intuition.Over the past years COW Shift Z created diverse projects in distinct areas of music. Her EP “Funeral for the Selves” she performed in clubs mainly in The Netherlands and Portugal. She also created the “Biljimeiri Anthem” for the Utopa Organ and electronics and other multimedia projects\, such as “buffer manelzinho 1204.8” a multimedia opera. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3i6EFITd08 \nlowkolos (TR/NL\, aka mert gençer) is an Amsterdam-based A/V artist and producer focused on crafting unique\, immersive experiences. Drawing inspiration from ‘Musique Concrète’\, he aims to bring novelty to music by breaking free from traditional composition methods\, such as grids and metric measurements. His genre-bending productions feature narrative textures\, computer processing\, complex rhythms\, and innovative sound design. When paired with his visuals\, this fusion creates a dynamic and evolving experience that keeps audiences engaged and excited throughout his performances. \nDuring Tell Me More #2 lowkolos will present ‘there is no harmony’ a multi-layered holographic A/V show inspired by Werner Herzog’s documentary ‘Burden of Dreams’. In this performance\, and in collaboration with A/V artist and technologist Allison Wright\, lowkolos uses a holographic foil that\, when paired with haze\, creates an ethereal 3D quality. Unlike traditional theater scrims\, the holographic foils create a lensing effect\, refracting light to transform the venue into an immersive light installation. Suspended vertically in two layers\, the projection material warps the visuals\, further exploring the theme of harmony and disharmony. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/lowkolo… \n\nNobody’s Free Until Everybody’s Free | Fundraiser EP\nThis collaboration between Utrecht-based ambient violinist and composer Honingbeer and Berlin-based poet Mirthe van Popering merges spoken word with haunting sonic layerings. A fundraiser project born out of 15 years of friendship and 434 days of unflinching genocide\, their paired voices call us to feel—deeply and in discomfort. \nComing from a shared background in music\, the two longtime friends now create an interdisciplinary texture of expression—one that balances sound with white space\, ink with strings\, and poses questions of defiant connection amidst shattering loss. Osama Hussein\, a Palestinian visual artist from Gaza\, created the cover art. \nAll proceeds from their fundraiser EP “Nobody’s Free Until Everybody’s Free” and merch go directly to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund\, The Freedom Theatre and Osama Hussein to support him and his family in Gaza. \nMirthe van Popering resides in Berlin\, where she writes\, translates and resists. A graduate of Cultural Analysis in Amsterdam\, she studied creative writing at The Writers Studio New York and poetry with Tracy Fuad at the Berlin Writers’ Workshop. Her writing is in touch with what is being obscured—it subverts language\, foregoes answers\, destabilizes existing systems and revels in surreal desire. In seeking new modes of meaning-making\, her work poses an intricate cultural critique where slippage in sound and sense become a site of possibility\, of hope. \nHoningbeer is the solo project of violinist Marthe Lasthuis. She extends and bends violin with electronics\, flanking Neo-Classic and experimental artists such as Nils Frahm\, Kara-Lis Coverdale\, Colleen and Mary Lattimore. Her latest EP “Opia” was released with Frank Wiedemann’s Bigamo. Hongingbeer’s compositions require listeners to submerge—and reemerge elsewhere. With atmospheric\, melancholy layerings\, she lures us into a primordial place and time; a clearing in the forest singing\, a vibration of the heart. \nOsama Hussein is a Palestinian visual artist and interior designer who has been forcibly displaced multiple times since October of last year. His small studio and paintings were completely destroyed by the Israeli military. In a fundraiser he started to support his family\, Osama writes: “Every night\, we sleep to the sounds of explosions and rockets that strike our hearts before our homes\,” describing how the loss of loved ones has become a “painful routine.” Amidst the genocide\, Osama continues to visualize the plight of his people in black-and-white drawings\, documenting the bloodshed and devastation Gazans endure every day.https://www.gofundme.com/f/hel… \nShow Pony (USA/NL) is the solo project of Amsterdam-based American double bassist and vocalist Laura Nygren. In her new audiovisual project\, I May Fall into the Sound\, created with Tatiana Rosa and Nina Kay\, she uses a synthesizer to explore the erosion of the human body as a metaphor for our aging planet. The project focuses on the small eroding island of Massancumock\, which is expected to disappear into the surrounding sea by 2026\, near the area where Nygren grew up.Using beats\, synths\, strings\, and text\, Show Pony creates atmospheric landscapes—a world to get lost in. During live performances\, she brings these landscapes to life for the audience through her immersive shows. In 2021\, Show Pony released her self-titled debut EP\, created in collaboration with producer/multi-instrumentalist No Compliments\, in a specially designed 3D online space during the online edition of the Rewire Festival. In 2022\, she created Lullaby for a Slow Apocalypse with Tatiana Rosa and Simon van Steenis\, a performative installation combining string instruments\, ceramic instruments\, and chamber music arrangements from her debut EP. This work challenged audiences to question their definitions of the end of the world. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4k448DxV7Y&t=7s \nWarr (UK/NL) is an Amsterdam-based electronic music producer from East London\, UK. Inspired by the more avant-garde avenues of dance music\, Warr bridges dark and unconventional sound textures with raw\, hypnotic techno grooves in their live and DJ sets. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/warrrr \n\nThis event is made possible by AFK (Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunsten).

SUMMARY:ORBITS X SPACE IS THE PLACE FALL SERIES #3
DESCRIPTION:dinner 18.30; music 20 h \nThe Orbits X Space is the Place series concludes with a special evening featuring the young\, upcoming experimental piano talent Lida Brouskari and the lyrical\, unpredictable duo Hristo Goleminov and Siebren Smink. This evening closes with Frank Rosaly’s amazing Ruidoscuro quartet\, super in shape after their Belgian tour organized by SITP\, full of power\, with transcendental raw energy. \nLida Brouskari solo\nLida Brouskari graces us solo\, on the keys. A skilled pianist who started at a very early age\, Brouskari has been making waves in the local scene in various formations\, including her band Nufaro\, which blends avant-garde pop sensibilities with experimental and ’70s rock influences.\nLida Brouskari – keys \n\nHristo Goleminov / Siebren Smink\nHristo Goleminov is a saxophonist\, composer\, and multi-instrumentalist with a keen interest in free improvisation. For this event\, he’s in full interplay with close friend and long-time collaborator Siebren Smink\, a guitarist and composer who was steeped in psych rock as a kid. They will play new compositions by Goleminov\, exploring baroque-inspired counterpoint\, oddly singable melodies\, and interwoven structures within the low confines of the baritone sax and guitar.\nHristo Goleminov – saxophone | Siebren Smink – guitar \nRuidoscuro\nFrank Rosaly’s Ruidoscuro presents strict sequential patterns against improvisation to inhabit ritualistic musical movement. The music tells a dark\, haunting story in a richly layered context of spinning polyrhythms\, bi-tonal melodic material\, and pivoting harmonic structures in a new music that defies centralization. Layered systems of repetition\, trance-based cycles\, and melodic motifs spin and bridge one another\, creating space for the listener to become lost in the raw energy of this powerful quartet.\nMarta Warelis – keys | Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti – electronics | Andy Moor – guitar | Frank Rosaly – drums \n  \n—\nTickets via spaceistheplace.eu\, sliding scale 10\, – 15\,- euro\n\nOrbits x Space is the Place fall series – October 15\, November 19 & December 17 at Dokzaal\, Amsterdam \nContinuing their refreshing programming\, Orbits has offered Amsterdam’s improv scene showcases featuring some of the city’s most creative young musicians. A meant-to-be combination with Space is the Place\, right?! Alignment with the listeners and a good dose of surprising elements are key. Includes a nutritious and tasty meal each time. Come and join us. \nWith: Novelo Vago\, Elder Ones + Karen Ng\, Julien Desprez / Aviv Noam / Gard Nilssen / Omer Govreen\, Omer Govreen Quartet\, Ken Vandermark / Terrie Ex\, Lida Brouskari\, Hristo Goleminov / Siebren Smink\, Ruidoscuro

SUMMARY:Dok Night | SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA // SLANTZETO I SYANKATA 1962 (Sun and Shadow\, Слънцето и сянката)
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday there’s a Vegan Dinner accompanying an exhibition opening/closing\, a live performance\, live music\, movie screening or …\nCome meet other people interested in art and activism\, good food and great prices. Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar. \n*** \n18.00 Bar open \n19.00 Vegan Food /// 2-course meal for 7 – 10 € \n20.30 SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA \nSLANTZETO I SYANKATA  1962\n(Sun and Shadow\, Слънцето и сянката) \n \nDirected by Rangel Vulchanov\n69 minutes\nIn Bulgarian with English subtitles \nThis film follows two people on a beach\, a male and female in their early 20s\, who are trying to leave the scars of World War II behind them… they are the new post-war generation and they’re attempting to reinvent their lives\, focusing more on creativity and playfulness rather than repeating the disastrous tragedy of the previous generation. \nThis film is balanced between twin emotions. One is the mood of the carefree beach\, the feeling of having finally emerged from war and finally there is peace. The second emotion is remembering how ghastly war is. The year this film was made the United States was seriously deciding to use nuclear weapons for the second time—this time against Russia and Cuba. The event was called the Cuban missile crisis and President Kennedy was on the edge of pushing the nuclear button again. So there was tension in the air around the world\, and the understanding that peace could be shattered at any moment. For anyone living during these years\, any plane that roared overhead suddenly reminded them of possible disaster. \nThe main actress of this movie\, as it turns out\, is young Polish actress Anna Prucna\, who continued making courageous movies in European cinema during the 60s and 70s (including Makavejev’s Sweet Movie). She loved Pasolini\, and even took one of his poems\, put it to music and sang the lyrics. \nThis movie was made at a time very similar to the one we face now\, when a threat of possible nuclear annihilation hangs in the air. The biggest difference is that in the 1960s people understood what a disaster nuclear war would be\, whereas today it’s barely thought about.  This will be another outrageously rare screening of a neglected gem from the past. \n+ GUERNICA   1978\nDirected by Emir Kusturica\n18 minutes\nIn Czech with English subtitles \nThis is the graduation film of renowned Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica. He didn’t learn to make  films in his own home country of Yugoslavia\, but instead went to study at the legendary film school in Prague. In this short flick a young boy is taken to a museum where he is bewildered by Picasso’s 1937 painting of the horror of war Guernica. \n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\nPlantage Doklaan 8-12\n20:30\nDinners are available from 19:00\n\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world.

Julio is a Mexican artist who has returned with his family for a year to the Netherlands\, after being here for his Master studies at The Dutch Art Institute in 2010. SUMMARY:Dok Night / Filmavond: MARBLE ASS directed by Zelimir Žilnik
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday we’re open\, normally with food BUT this week the KITCHEN IS CLOSED.\nCome for a drink\, meet other people interested in art and activism. Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar. \n*** \n18.00 Bar open \n20.30 Free screening \nMARBLE ASS   1995 \n\n(Dupe od mramora)\nDirected by Zelimir Žilnik\n86 minutes\nIn Serbian with English subtitles \n\nOh\, all those cutting-edge movies from the former east bloc that seem to be lost… an entire world (and reality) went up in smoke almost immediately when the Berlin wall fell. But actually they are sometimes still there\, buried very deep somewhere. This one is from Yugoslavia\, a country that had a rich history of adventurous filmmaking. There was a whole wave of filmmakers who were wild and euphoric\, with biting insights into politics and culture that were razor sharp. In fact they are so sharp\, if you go into them extensively\, you are bound to cut yourself once or twice. And the rascal who made this particular movie was one of the most uncompromising and inspired\, having helped ignite the legendary Yugo  Black Wave cinema movement in the 1960s. Here we catch him 25 years later\, and he’s still knocking out radical movies that don’t fit in any box. \nZelimir Žilnik\, like most of his Black wave comrades\, focused on the outsiders of society. In this way they attempted to shift the axis of the entire country. This flick was made in the early 1990s\, and anyone that knows their history will understand that at this point in time Yugoslavia was a war-torn country. So this film throws us in the middle of that huge battle\, but what an unusual angle it takes! \nMade during the Balkan war what we get\, in a way\, is a defense of trans queer culture amid the guns and bombs going off everywhere. It focuses on two transgender sex workers—Merlin and Sanela—who have gone into this line of work as a form of defiance against the macho militaristic war culture existing in Yugoslavia at the time. Blending this very real historical situation with a fictional queer narrative makes this a hybrid example of ‘docufiction’. This aspect becomes even more true when you realize the two main actors are actually transgender prostitutes in real life\, so in a way they are just being themselves. \nAlmost impossible to imagine\, this Yugoslavian flick is about sexual diversity\, identity fluidity\, social and class conditioning. It revolves around a wild subculture that wasn’t trying  to commercialise\, hype\, or Instagram its identity. And its beauty is precisely that\, it was a radical alternative to the mainstream—mirroring it\, distorting it\, parodying it—but not trying to fit into it. I was listening to an interview with a musician recently\, who was looking at a leaf in a garden\, and while holding it talked about how singular it was—that just being itself was already its statement\, and how it didn’t have to try to imitate all the other wildlife around it. The offbeat trans community in this movie is a lot like that. \n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays.

SUMMARY:Dok Night | The Last Supper presents: Time for Revolution!
\n*** \n18.00 Bar open \n18.30 Vegan Food by Het Laatste Avondmaal \n20:30 The Last Supper presents: Time for Revolution! \nCome and learn from the first revolution of the 21st century and how it can guide struggle movements in the Netherlands and Belgium! \nThe Rojava Revolution began in 2012 with the declaration of autonomy for northern and eastern Syria. More than a decade after it began this social\, multicultural and feminist revolution continues to grow and expand. The Turkish state is currently attempting to carry out a military invasion of the autonomous territory in order to put an end to this revolutionary experiment\, but the historic resistance of the peoples of the region is preventing the invasion from advancing. \nThe paradigm of Democratic Modernity on which the Rojava Revolution is based remains little-known. Developed by Abdullah Öcalan\, it guides the Kurdistan Liberation Movement. Rejecting the nation-state\, this paradigm proposes a social project based on radical democracy\, women’s liberation and social ecology. \nBeyond the Middle East\, how can this paradigm serve as a guide for the development of new revolutionary dynamics? How can we open up new perspectives for liberation from the heart of capitalist modernity?\nHow have young people been organizing for several years to build democratic confederalism internationally? \nThis evening is proposed by Lêgerîn\, a magazine founded in Rojava\, which today is being developed autonomously by young people present on all the continents.

SUMMARY:Tentoonstelling: In the Next Step\, Everything Changes
\nDoe mee!\nIedereen is welkom! \nFotocredits: Dané Vonk\, Je keek en zag me [2016]. \n__________________________________________________ \n[ENGLISH TEXT]\nIn the Next Step\, Everything Changes \nExhibition and workshops | working in motion & experiments \nFrom Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 April 2025\, the Plantage Dok will transform into a vibrant space of experiment and movement with In the Next Step\, Everything Changes. This four-day event brings a dynamic mix of exhibitions\, live events\, performances\, workshops\, film screening and… a tour. \nNothing is fixed here — work unfolds\, takes new turns and makes the creative process visible. In the Next Step\, Everything Changes has no end point\, but an in-between space in which everything can still go either way. It is a place where art and ideas can still develop and where visitors and makers engage in dialogue. The theme ‘in motion’ revolves around change\, migration and moving — both physically and mentally. It is about shifting borders and how displacement affects identity\, memory and connection. \nParticipants [so far]: Dané Vonk\, Sonia Kasovsky\, Aukje Koelstra\, Bobbie Fay Brandsen\, Dorota Dabrowska\, Karin van de Wiel\, Maaike Bol\, Claire van der Mee\, Lily Harings\, Alex Winters\, Niké Dolman\, Eva Schippers\, Lian van de Wiel Yasia Khomenko and Mirjam Lang. \nActivities \nIn the Next Step\, Everything Changes opens on Thursday\, April 10 at 7:30 PM with a collective workshop by Claire van der Mee and a live drawing performance by Alex Winters\, followed by a DJ set by DJ Lian and DJ Dané. In addition\, there are all kinds of activities in the exhibition space that you can participate in: \nOn Saturday April 12\, the exhibition space will be dedicated to an intensive workshop program by Aukje Koelstra\, Yasia Khomenko [SAMOPRINT] en Maaike Bol/ Maiami Prints. \nOn Sunday April 13\, Dané Vonk will give the last workshop at 2 p.m. We then end the day and the event with a tour: this is a moment to look back on what has come together with artists\, participants and visitors. Then we raise a glass before we step back into the world: In the Next Step\, Everything Changes. (Let’s hope so!) \nProgram workshops \nFrom April 10 to 13\, 2025\, Plantage Dok in Amsterdam will transform into a vibrant workshop of ideas and materials. In the large hall\, where the exhibition In the Next Step\, Everything Changes can also be seen\, you can participate in no fewer than five workshops! \nThe event In the Next Step\, Everything Changes is a lively space in which art unfolds\, shifts and responds to who enters. The workshops are the beating heart of this process. These are moments of meeting\, experimenting and making things together. Here you not only share a table\, but also stories\, techniques and perspectives. \nMaking \nYou will work under the guidance of artists who also show work in the exhibition. In an environment where nothing is set in stone\, these sessions invite you to try\, fail and start again. At the end of the day (Sunday April 13) we close together; all artists are present\, and you can then take your creation home.   \nThe theme ‘in motion’ revolves around change\, migration and moving — both physically and mentally. In the workshops\, the makers each approach this theme in their own way\, in hands-on sessions in which you work with textiles\, patterns and transfer techniques on paper and fabric. In the middle of the exhibition space\, at large tables\, ideas are converted into matter. What is created remains visible as part of the exhibition. It is a snapshot of four days of growth\, movement and exchange. \nGet involved! \nEveryone is welcome! Participation in the workshops is on a donation basis (pay what you can\, target price from €10 per workshop\, based on material use). You can choose one workshop\, or combine several—for example during the workshop marathon on Saturday April 12 from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM. \nIt is a good idea to register\, because there is a limited number of places per workshop. Let us know when you want to come: schipperseva@gmail.com. \n– \nApril 10\, from 7:30 PM \nWorkshop: What do you take with you to new places? \nBY Claire van der Mee WITH Collage\, textiles\, transfer \nWe all take something with us to new places – an object\, a thought\, a feeling. In this workshop with Claire van der Mee we depict those memories in collage on fabric. Using cutting\, transfer sheets and a heat press\, we create a collective quilt together\, which becomes a growing work of art in the exhibition In the Next Step\, Everything Changes over four days.  \n👉 You can collect your contribution on Sunday afternoon\, April 13\, or make an appointment with Eva Schippers (schipperseva@gmail.com) the following week to collect your memory! \n– \nApril 12\, 11am – 12.30pm \nWorkshop: Can I help you if I hang my laundry outside? \nBY Aukje Koelstra SOME textile\, paint\, stencil \nIn this workshop you will work with artist Aukje Koelstra with used household textiles\, paint and other materials. From her activist view on textiles\, nature and people\, Aukje invites you to work with symbolism and meaning. Textiles have carried secret messages for centuries. Together we investigate old signs and create new ones\, as signposts for those who need them. \nGet involved – create\, connect & leave a mark! \n– \nApril 12\, 12:30 – 2:30 \nWorkshop: Manifest printing \nBY Yasia Khomenko/ RCR KHOMENKO SAMOPRINT WITH textile\, transfer \nIn this hands-on workshop you will get started with SAMOPRINT. This is an interactive\, DIY printing method that revolves around recycling and sustainability\, developed by Yasia Khomenko. Together we explore how textiles can be a powerful means of social or political expression. You cut\, rearrange and combine from archetypal images to create your own visual statement. \n👉 Bring a piece of clothing you can work on and show your voice in print! \n– \nApril 12\, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM \nWorkshop: In motion/ Riso printing \nBY Maaike Bol/ Maiami Prints WAT Riso print\, collage\, watercolor \nIn this workshop we will dive together into the idea of moving lines and the migration of plants\, animals and people. We start by creating a joint Zine\, and you help build this story! We experiment with analog techniques such as collage and watercolor\, and you discover the world of Riso printing in a playful way. Then we really get to work: we print the Zine\, and of course you get a copy to take home. \nMake. Play. Print. Share! \n– \nApril 13\, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM \nWorkshop: Moving at home \nBY Dané Vonk WHAT Paper\, drawing\, building \nHow does moving and moving around your home affect your identity? Together with Dané Vonk we investigate these questions using paper. We build a model with facades of houses we have lived in. We think back to the memories in these houses\, and reflect on the housing crisis and the hassle surrounding moving. An interactive workshop for anyone who has ever wondered what ‘home’ actually means. \nPhoto credits: Dané Vonk\, You looked and saw me [2016].
