DESCRIPTION:2 amazing bands.\nVegan food for cheap at 6:00 and than doors at 8:00Damage is 5 euros or more.\n\nMIRAGE https://roachlegrecords.bandcamp.com/album/immagini-postumeTheir sound is unique\, with the (mostly) Italian language vocals tying them to the rich history of Italian hardcore while the music draws on post-punk atmosphere and psychedelic texture without sounding like anything other than hardcore punk. The chorus on the guitar and the dark chord progressions make comparisons to spooky-sounding punk bands like Part 1 and Rudimentary Peni obvious\, but Mirage really reminds me of Wretched’s last 12”\, La Tua Morte Non Aspetta. Immagini Postume feels more interesting\, exciting\, and better-executed than most of the vinyl releases I hear these days\, so if this is what Mirage is offering as their demo cassette\, I’m very excited to see where they go from here. While we wait to find out\, though\, Immagini Postume will give us plenty to chew on.\n\n\n\nTRAUMATIZERhttps://neontasterecords.bandcamp.com/album/traumatizerThis is blistering D-beat with a handful of huge\, metallic riffing and a vocalist that eats nails for dessert. There’s a blown-out production that brings to mind Bootlicker’s earlier recordings but where the Lickers line American Hardcore with No Future stomp\, Traumatizer goes full tilt into the noize and grips you by the throat. There’s no pogo present\, just rage and violence. Toss it on while you take the late-night walk home from the bar. These 6 tracks will make a compelling case that those darting eyes and high hackles in the alleyway are the threat you were worried about. Those focused pupils from an animal whose only option is to take as many of you with them as they can. You didn’t even mean any harm\, poor you. But here we are\, kill or be killed. Prey or predator. No one gets out alive\, we just measure blood loss for points.

(free screening) \n\nTHE EVE OF IVAN KUPALO 1968\n(Вечір на Івана Купала / Vecher nakanune Ivana Kupala)\nDirected by Yurii Illienko\n71 minutes\nIn Ukrainian with English subtitles\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere was a certain kind of ‘folklore poetic’ cinema that emerged in the 1960s in the former East Bloc\, which Ukrainian filmmakers were a large part of. There was a history for this movement that can be traced all the way back to the 1920s with a lyrical-experimental filmmaker named Dovzhenko who was born in northern Ukraine. But in the 60s movies were suddenly ignited with color… and it was almost as if this folklore-poetic spirit was infused with traditional folklore patterns and designs\, resulting in an almost psychedelic trip of mind-blowing tapestry of visual patterns.\n\nThe director of this particular movie Yurii Illienko had been a cameraman for one of the greatest practitioners of this aesthetic\, whose name was Sergi Paradjanov. Here as a director Illienko takes this overheated fantasy-folklore imagery to tell the story of a young poverty-stricken farmer who wants to marry his true love\, but when her father interferes\, the young man goes to make a deal with a demon. Everything climaxes and a kind of delirious madness. It’s based on “St John’s Eve” by Gogol\, a tale that taps into the deep mythology of the region. A cinematic step into another world\, both ancient and modern.\n\n\n\n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\n\nFilm starts at 20:30\nFree screening\nDinners are available from 19:00\n\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world.

DESCRIPTION:Subbacultcha and We Are Public present the fourth edition of Loom: a recurring (on- and offline) program showcasing a multitude of creative disciplines. In 2024\, Loom will house 5 events\, coinciding with talks\, releases and a publication. To wrap it all up\, we’ll host a closing festival in winter. “Ginning\, opening\, cleaning\, combing\, drawing\, spinning\, winding\, warping\, sizing and beaming.” \nThis time around\, we have invited Antwerp-based performance and sound artist Boris de Klerk\, whose practice focuses on ‘the exploration of live sound in a performative space’. He is particularly interested in investigating the sensory possibilities of space in relation to the performer and the audience. By approaching the theatrical space as a composer\, Boris attempts to reorganize the senses\, exploring what happens when you create theater where sound takes the lead and mise-en-scène\, set design\, lighting\, and choreography are consequences of choices made based on auditory elements. The question that guides most of his work is: “How theatrical can sound be\, and what happens when you approach theater not as a visual but as an auditory medium?” \nInterdisciplinary sound-artist and performer Görkem Arıkan will present Wirwarp (2024)\, a self-made instrument that draws inspiration from Michel Waisvisz’ distinctive approach to sonic interactions and musical expression. Wirwarp is made out of conductive rubber and cord stretch sensors that create a dynamic mesh on a wooden frame. Through warping and tangling the mesh-pulling cords\, pushing the nodes\, and adjusting the frame’s angle with moveable hinges\, Görkem is able to play the instrument\, turning it into a canvas for sonic exploration. \nElina Tapio will be DJ’ing during the evening. Her sets embody an experimental ethos\, favouring dark and eerie soundscapes\, blending psychedelic rhythms with industrial atmospheres. She is currently a resident at Mutant Radio\, and co-hosts the radio shows Scrying the Landscape and axia maxim. Allerzielen op 2 november\, is de dag om de doden te herdenken. Their first EP\, “GUM!\,” was well received by the Belgian press and their 2023 follow-up\, “Milieu”\, was made in collaboration with the label MAGMA.\n\n\n\n\nSaturno Santos & Chaerin Im(@9nijntjes\, @chaerinmusic)\n\n \nA rare duo sighting of KB_ founder and songwriter Gabriel de Oliveira (aka SS) and close collaborator and pianist Chaerin Im in an intimate setting\, approaching new songs and improvisations filtered through a language of Brazilian and Korean folk musics. A delicate thread of tradition and avant-garde in electro-acoustic meetings of voice\, guitar\, piano\, small instruments\, viola de cocho\, and synthesizers.\n\n\n\nTzara the Machine (@tzarathemachine)\n\n\n\n\nThe solo project of Venezuelan singer-songwriter and producer Francisco Garrido. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Björk\, Arca and Bon Iver\, Tzara creates an organic sound\, mixing sampled acoustic instruments and electronic elements. Through vulnerable lyricism and sonic experimentation\, their music deals with themes of mental health and the nonsensical nature of our thoughts. Francisco is joined by Carolina Gemmell\, both on vocals and guitar.\n\n\n\n\nARIA (@sampaolesic\, @pietroeliabarcellona)\n\n\n\n\nARIA\, the duo of accordionist Carlo Sampaolesi and double bassist Pietro Elia Barcellona\, explores the limits and boundaries of experimental and contemporary music. The duo has collaborated with composers such as Francesca Verunelli and Justė Janulytė\, and researched early chamber and non-Eurocentric music\, reinterpreting it through a present lens. They emphasize timbre as a key element in their creation\, experimenting with improvisation and tuning systems predating the well-tempered scale.

(free screening) \n\nSHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS  1964 \n \n(Тіні забутих предків)\nDirected by Sergi Parajanov\n97 minutes\nIn Ukrainian with English subtitles \nThis is the gorgeously photographed feature film by the greatest post-war Georgian-Soviet director; Sergi Parajanov. Despite the fact that Parajanov is one of the most internationally acclaimed directors of all time\, his films are rarely shown today. I would say the reason for this is that now we live under ‘capitalist realism’\, meaning movies have to be dumbed-down in order to make money in a consumer economy. When we projected Parajanov’s classic The Color of Pomegranates (Sayat Nova)\, the audience was blown away. \nParajanov would often get in trouble with Soviet authorities because his wild\, crazy\, visionary movies reached back to the pagan\, ethnic roots of the places he shot in. Another reason was that he was bisexual\, and therefore queer\, which was as criminal in the Soviet bloc as it was here in the west. As a result\, he spent many years in jail. Andrei Tarkovsky was a great friend of his and also one of his firmest defenders. This film is a deceptively simple love story\, but it is also a spellbinding blend of mythology\, hypnotic religious iconography\, Ukrainian poetry and pagan magic. The movie is sublime\, and at times it veers off the cinematic map completely to become a delirious\, spinning\, psychedelic trip. Some critics consider this to be Parajanov’s greatest masterpiece. \nIn fact this film belongs to an in-between world of ghosts and shadows\, thick with a heathen atmosphere. In a way\, it has a straightforward romantic narrative… but the way this simple love story is conveyed is extremely visual\, unearthing the harsh beauty of the Soviet-Ukrainian soul. It is nothing short of a cinematic earthquake\, a stunning document of a forgotten time and culture. The fierce cinematography was crafted by Yurii Illienko\, director of The Eve of Ivan Kupala. \nRaw\, authentic\, pure pagan poetry. A magnificent film that should be seen by anyone who is even slightly interested in real cinema… and once again it is a film that is criminally never ever screened anymore. \n“Astonishing…extraordinary. Her practice focuses on integrating different music genres in her artistic language. She is a creative programmer exploring new instruments that let her improvise with her own sound design and music intuition.Over the past years COW Shift Z created diverse projects in distinct areas of music. Her EP “Funeral for the Selves” she performed in clubs mainly in The Netherlands and Portugal. Drawing inspiration from ‘Musique Concrète’\, he aims to bring novelty to music by breaking free from traditional composition methods\, such as grids and metric measurements. His genre-bending productions feature narrative textures\, computer processing\, complex rhythms\, and innovative sound design. When paired with his visuals\, this fusion creates a dynamic and evolving experience that keeps audiences engaged and excited throughout his performances. \nDuring Tell Me More #2 lowkolos will present ‘there is no harmony’ a multi-layered holographic A/V show inspired by Werner Herzog’s documentary ‘Burden of Dreams’. In this performance\, and in collaboration with A/V artist and technologist Allison Wright\, lowkolos uses a holographic foil that\, when paired with haze\, creates an ethereal 3D quality. Unlike traditional theater scrims\, the holographic foils create a lensing effect\, refracting light to transform the venue into an immersive light installation. Suspended vertically in two layers\, the projection material warps the visuals\, further exploring the theme of harmony and disharmony. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/lowkolo… \n\nNobody’s Free Until Everybody’s Free | Fundraiser EP\nThis collaboration between Utrecht-based ambient violinist and composer Honingbeer and Berlin-based poet Mirthe van Popering merges spoken word with haunting sonic layerings. A fundraiser project born out of 15 years of friendship and 434 days of unflinching genocide\, their paired voices call us to feel—deeply and in discomfort. \nComing from a shared background in music\, the two longtime friends now create an interdisciplinary texture of expression—one that balances sound with white space\, ink with strings\, and poses questions of defiant connection amidst shattering loss. Osama Hussein\, a Palestinian visual artist from Gaza\, created the cover art. \nAll proceeds from their fundraiser EP “Nobody’s Free Until Everybody’s Free” and merch go directly to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund\, The Freedom Theatre and Osama Hussein to support him and his family in Gaza. \nMirthe van Popering resides in Berlin\, where she writes\, translates and resists. A graduate of Cultural Analysis in Amsterdam\, she studied creative writing at The Writers Studio New York and poetry with Tracy Fuad at the Berlin Writers’ Workshop. Her writing is in touch with what is being obscured—it subverts language\, foregoes answers\, destabilizes existing systems and revels in surreal desire. In seeking new modes of meaning-making\, her work poses an intricate cultural critique where slippage in sound and sense become a site of possibility\, of hope. \nHoningbeer is the solo project of violinist Marthe Lasthuis. She extends and bends violin with electronics\, flanking Neo-Classic and experimental artists such as Nils Frahm\, Kara-Lis Coverdale\, Colleen and Mary Lattimore. Her latest EP “Opia” was released with Frank Wiedemann’s Bigamo. Hongingbeer’s compositions require listeners to submerge—and reemerge elsewhere. With atmospheric\, melancholy layerings\, she lures us into a primordial place and time; a clearing in the forest singing\, a vibration of the heart. \nOsama Hussein is a Palestinian visual artist and interior designer who has been forcibly displaced multiple times since October of last year. His small studio and paintings were completely destroyed by the Israeli military. In a fundraiser he started to support his family\, Osama writes: “Every night\, we sleep to the sounds of explosions and rockets that strike our hearts before our homes\,” describing how the loss of loved ones has become a “painful routine.” Amidst the genocide\, Osama continues to visualize the plight of his people in black-and-white drawings\, documenting the bloodshed and devastation Gazans endure every day.https://www.gofundme.com/f/hel… \nShow Pony (USA/NL) is the solo project of Amsterdam-based American double bassist and vocalist Laura Nygren. In her new audiovisual project\, I May Fall into the Sound\, created with Tatiana Rosa and Nina Kay\, she uses a synthesizer to explore the erosion of the human body as a metaphor for our aging planet. The project focuses on the small eroding island of Massancumock\, which is expected to disappear into the surrounding sea by 2026\, near the area where Nygren grew up.Using beats\, synths\, strings\, and text\, Show Pony creates atmospheric landscapes—a world to get lost in. During live performances\, she brings these landscapes to life for the audience through her immersive shows.In 2021\, Show Pony released her self-titled debut EP\, created in collaboration with producer/multi-instrumentalist No Compliments\, in a specially designed 3D online space during the online edition of the Rewire Festival. In 2022\, she created Lullaby for a Slow Apocalypse with Tatiana Rosa and Simon van Steenis\, a performative installation combining string instruments\, ceramic instruments\, and chamber music arrangements from her debut EP.
