DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday there’s a Vegan Dinner accompanying an exhibition opening/closing\, a live performance\, live music\, movie screening or …\nCome meet other people interested in art and activism\, good food and great prices. Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar. \n*** \nCome enjoy delicious food\, good company and support direct action against deportations. \nEvery day people are threatened with deportations from the Netherlands to countries they deliberately left and don’t want to go to. The dinner is in support of activists taking action against these racist practices. \nSolidarity actions are helping with legal procedures that may stop the deportation\, supporting people to stay out of the hands of deportation agencies and standing up on deportation flights. The latter form of action is a costly method. So come and bring some cash in exchange for a nice meal and learn more about how to stop a deportation. \nBamia Stew “Okra”\, Rice and a Green Salad by @mahmmoudie and friends! \nAbolish the borders for freedom of movement for all. \n  \nDoors and bar open 18:00\nFood starts 19:00

SUMMARY:Dok Night - Live Music Oldseed & Film FOTOGRAFIA 1973 Directed by Pál Zolnay
\n*** \n18.00 Bar open \n19.00 Vegan Food /// 2-course meal for 7 – 10 € \n  \n20.00 Oldseed in the basement \noldseed is the proof.  They still exist\, the nomadic artists on the road less travelled.  \noldseed continues the tradition of the thoughtful folk singers yet with the enthusiasm of the diy spirit.  With a powerful and dynamic voice\, the Canadian-born musician\, who lives in Germany between tours\, sings stories that tell of a life lived with honesty.\noldseed’s music lets the audience feel what we need to feel; to understand that we learn so much more from our failure than our success. This is to be celebrated.\nThe music is deceptively simple\, dynamic and intense.\noldseed writes songs that cut deep and directly into the heart.\noldseed brings an evening full of compelling\, insightful songs from over 20 years on the road that will resonate with audiences everywhere. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you like honest\, powerful and compassionate music\, oldseed is a master class.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n20.30 Film screening \nFOTOGRAFIA  1973\nDirected by Pál Zolnay\n82 minutes\nIn Hungarian with English subtitles \n \nIn some circles this obscure Hungarian film has been compared to Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow up… because it is about the act of taking photographs. But where Antonioni’s film maps the attempt to photograph the modernity of the hip 60s\, this Hungarian crew goes backward to photograph the villagers living deep in the countryside\, some of whom have never even been photographed in their lives. In the end\, this film questions our entire process of ‘imaging’ ourselves. \nLingering somewhere between a documentary and a feature film\, it examines with a critical eye how we relate to photographs in general – something profoundly needed in our present world of selfies and the flood of images that bombard even our private lives. All these images surround and influence us\, but we barely understand them… and this rare movie helps us to take the first few steps in doing that. The cinematography of the film itself is incredible\, in that old crafted sort of way\, when b&w photography in the east bloc was still an art form. A few of the images are enough to blow you away\, and shatter all your expectations of a documentary. \nWhat I love most about this film\, besides its poetic quality\, are some of the villagers who reject photography outright\, and even hate it. No way they will allow themselves to be captured and framed. Also\, we see other people who don’t know how to behave in front of a camera… you can see their eyes are more detached and calm – which is incredibly refreshing in our present Instagramed world where everybody knows how to ‘act’ when their picture is being taken. In this movie the act of taking a photograph is rare and almost holy. \nThe soundtrack to the film is a quiet masterpiece\, made by one of the photographers who strums his acoustic guitar loosely as they walk through the landscape\, knocking out lyrics about life and death off the top of his head. It gives the entire movie a sharp bittersweet tone. \nAdventurous\, lucid\, poignant\, lyrical\, thought-provoking\, piercing\, philosophical. Haunting images of a time we have forgotten… images that we need to dig up again in order to remember what we have lost. An obscure gem of Hungarian cinema with a post-60s East Bloc mood. \n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n

A mix between Emo\, Pop\, Pop Punk and electronic music with a unique twist. With that sound he stands at the pedestal of the Lowlands emo movement. Zakmes takes heavy inspiration from bands and artists like: Blink 182\, American Football\, Tigers Jaw\, Title Fight\, Modern Baseball\, Nothing Nowhere\, and Tiny Moving Parts. Even though Zakmes is emo & pop-punk at its core he doesn’t mind genre bending. a rap verse here\, a jazz guitar solo there\, a Drum & Bass drum part here and again.\nIt feels like: Being happy\, falling in love AND out of love\, meeting friends\, playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 At Midnight\, missing friends\, dealing with life\, dealing with death\, skateboarding on summer evenings\, walks on fall afternoons\, laughing\, crying\, moshing\, dancing\, hugging\, and doing ALL of that with your 4 best friends in the 90’s and early 2000’s.\n(listen)\n\nGET SADEager to expand the alternative emo/post-hardcore horizon in the Netherlands\, Amsterdam based rockband Get Sad started experimenting with combining different genres and sounds they’ve admired since theywere in their early teen years. The result is a compelling\, energetic blend of genres such as Pop-Punk\, Post-Hardcore and shoegaze. “Let’s get sad together\, and make this world a better place.”\n(listen)\n\nSHOW WILL START AT 19:30 AND WILL END AT 22:30SUGGESTED DONATION €8-10Cash preferred!

How do we survive together with limited resources? How do people move from place to place without a constant distribution of fossil fuels? The comic brings the political tensions of Northern Europe into focus in a carnivalesque way\, and discusses issues important to queer communities: where to get vital medications\, such as hormones\, which are a requirement for life for many trans* people? How are gender and sexual norms changing as the post-apocalyptic society changes? \n\n\nWith quirky humour the graphic novel tackles current issues: the looming environmental crisis and the rise of the far-right violence in Northern Europe. \n\nFirst part available as a zine in the event among other comics!\nBIO: Henna Räsänen (HX) is a Berlin-based non-binary and queer comic artist whose work explores social norms through offbeat\, prickly humor. We will look at recent developments in animal monitoring systems and the enhanced capacity of radio tags to collect rich telemetric data from space. We also consider the adivasi idiom ‘jo naachi so baachi‘ – those who dance will survive\, as an alternate method to sense the rhythms and patterns of the Earth. \n \nDuring the tryout we juxtapose the two approaches to telemetry\, namely\, ‘becoming sensor’ and ‘mounting sensor’. We will start to think together\, how to reconcile these approaches or prepare ourselves to mourn the loss of one in the interest of the other.\nThis is an early tryout of the project and a peek into its research process. The project will premiere in 2026.

SUMMARY:Orbits x Space is the Place fall series #1
DESCRIPTION:dinner 18.30; music 20 h \nAn amazing first highly international night of the Orbits X Space is the Place series! The NY based activist musician Amirtha Kidambi comes to the Netherlands -after playing in ao Rewire and the Bimhuis earlier this year- with her Elder Ones\, this time joined by improvisational saxophonist Karen Ng. The explosive French guitarist Julien Desprez (Lukas Koenig\, Audrey Chen\, Nate Wooley\, Farida Amadou) will perform a fully engaging solo. And the Amsterdam based Novelo Vago will play their characteristic mix of playful\, experimental music. \nNovelo Vago: \nNovelo Vago is a contemporary music garage band characterized by an unconventional approach. Playful\, experimental\, sharp\, and sometimes witty: the trio uses a mix of toy instruments\, small percussion instruments\, piccolo\, sex toys\, whatnot! The band’s formation is rooted in a decade-long friendship\, valuing fun and togetherness as key\, above traditional rehearsal practices. \nVera Morais – voice\, toy instruments | Teresa Costa – flute\, piccolo\, toy instruments | Inês Lopes – toy piano\, melodica\, toy instruments \nElder Ones + Karen Ng:\nElder Ones is an experimental free jazz ensemble led by composer and vocalist Amirtha Kidambi featuring saxophonists Matt Nelson and Alfredo Colon\, bassist Lester St. Louis\, and drummer Jason Nazary. Kidambi’s voice weaves through intricate instrumentation with her characteristic syllabic\, frenzied\, and powerful utterances. Their music confronts themes like colonialism\, capitalism\, and violence\, channeling ancestral energy and resistance to systemic oppression through their performances. They are joined on stage by improvisational musician and sax-wizard Karen Ng. \nAmirtha Kidambi – vocals | Matt Nelson\, Alfredo Colon\, Karen Ng – saxophone | Lester St. Louis – bass | Jason Nazary – drums \nJulien Desprez:\nPerforming solo with only his guitar and effects pedals\, Julien Desprez engages all the senses\, placing the body and its movements at the heart of his practice. Here\, he presents Agora\, a twofold performance that plays with several points of view. A soft\, explosive\, and joyful trance merges polyrhythmics\, high-voltage electricity\, guitar\, and body until their rupture and reconciliation. With playfulness and frenzy\, a multiple world is negotiated through your listening. \nJulien Desprez – guitar\, podorhythmics\, electronics \n—\nTickets via spaceistheplace.eu\, sliding scale 10\, – 15\,- euro \n\nOrbits x Space is the Place fall series – October 15\, November 19 & December 17 at Dokzaal\, Amsterdam \nContinuing their refreshing programming\, Orbits has offered Amsterdam’s improv scene showcases featuring some of the city’s most creative young musicians. A meant-to-be combination with Space is the Place\, right?! Alignment with the listeners and a good dose of surprising elements are key. Includes a nutritious and tasty meal each time. Come and join us. \nWith: Novelo Vago\, Elder Ones + Karen Ng\, Julien Desprez / Aviv Noam / Gard Nilssen / Omer Govreen\, Omer Govreen Quartet\, Ken Vandermark / Terrie Ex\, Lida Brouskari\, Hristo Goleminov / Siebren Smink\, Ruidoscuro

SUMMARY:Two amazing bands: MIRAGE & TRAUMATIZER
DESCRIPTION:2 amazing bands.\nVegan food for cheap at 6:00 and than doors at 8:00Damage is 5 euros or more.\n\nMIRAGE https://roachlegrecords.bandcamp.com/album/immagini-postumeTheir sound is unique\, with the (mostly) Italian language vocals tying them to the rich history of Italian hardcore while the music draws on post-punk atmosphere and psychedelic texture without sounding like anything other than hardcore punk. The chorus on the guitar and the dark chord progressions make comparisons to spooky-sounding punk bands like Part 1 and Rudimentary Peni obvious\, but Mirage really reminds me of Wretched’s last 12”\, La Tua Morte Non Aspetta. Immagini Postume feels more interesting\, exciting\, and better-executed than most of the vinyl releases I hear these days\, so if this is what Mirage is offering as their demo cassette\, I’m very excited to see where they go from here. While we wait to find out\, though\, Immagini Postume will give us plenty to chew on.\n\n\n\nTRAUMATIZERhttps://neontasterecords.bandcamp.com/album/traumatizerThis is blistering D-beat with a handful of huge\, metallic riffing and a vocalist that eats nails for dessert. There’s a blown-out production that brings to mind Bootlicker’s earlier recordings but where the Lickers line American Hardcore with No Future stomp\, Traumatizer goes full tilt into the noize and grips you by the throat. There’s no pogo present\, just rage and violence. Toss it on while you take the late-night walk home from the bar. These 6 tracks will make a compelling case that those darting eyes and high hackles in the alleyway are the threat you were worried about. Those focused pupils from an animal whose only option is to take as many of you with them as they can. You didn’t even mean any harm\, poor you. But here we are\, kill or be killed. Prey or predator. No one gets out alive\, we just measure blood loss for points.

SUMMARY:Dok Night - SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA: THE EVE OF IVAN KUPALO 1968 (Вечір на Івана Купала / Vecher nakanune Ivana Kupala) Directed by Yurii Illienko

Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar. \n*** \n18.00 Bar open \n19.00 Vegan Food /// 2-course meal  10 € \n20.30. !! FILM !! (free screening) \n\nTHE EVE OF IVAN KUPALO 1968\n(Вечір на Івана Купала / Vecher nakanune Ivana Kupala)\nDirected by Yurii Illienko\n71 minutes\nIn Ukrainian with English subtitles\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere was a certain kind of ‘folklore poetic’ cinema that emerged in the 1960s in the former East Bloc\, which Ukrainian filmmakers were a large part of. There was a history for this movement that can be traced all the way back to the 1920s with a lyrical-experimental filmmaker named Dovzhenko who was born in northern Ukraine. But in the 60s movies were suddenly ignited with color… and it was almost as if this folklore-poetic spirit was infused with traditional folklore patterns and designs\, resulting in an almost psychedelic trip of mind-blowing tapestry of visual patterns.\n\nThe director of this particular movie Yurii Illienko had been a cameraman for one of the greatest practitioners of this aesthetic\, whose name was Sergi Paradjanov. Here as a director Illienko takes this overheated fantasy-folklore imagery to tell the story of a young poverty-stricken farmer who wants to marry his true love\, but when her father interferes\, the young man goes to make a deal with a demon. Everything climaxes and a kind of delirious madness. It’s based on “St John’s Eve” by Gogol\, a tale that taps into the deep mythology of the region. A cinematic step into another world\, both ancient and modern.\n\n\n\n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\n\nFilm starts at 20:30\nFree screening\nDinners are available from 19:00\n\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays.

SUMMARY:Loom: Boris de Klerk\, Görkem Arıkan & Elina Tapio (performances/sound\, by Subbacultcha and We Are Public)
DESCRIPTION:Subbacultcha and We Are Public present the fourth edition of Loom: a recurring (on- and offline) program showcasing a multitude of creative disciplines. In 2024\, Loom will house 5 events\, coinciding with talks\, releases and a publication. To wrap it all up\, we’ll host a closing festival in winter. “Ginning\, opening\, cleaning\, combing\, drawing\, spinning\, winding\, warping\, sizing and beaming.” \nThis time around\, we have invited Antwerp-based performance and sound artist Boris de Klerk\, whose practice focuses on ‘the exploration of live sound in a performative space’. He is particularly interested in investigating the sensory possibilities of space in relation to the performer and the audience. By approaching the theatrical space as a composer\, Boris attempts to reorganize the senses\, exploring what happens when you create theater where sound takes the lead and mise-en-scène\, set design\, lighting\, and choreography are consequences of choices made based on auditory elements. The question that guides most of his work is: “How theatrical can sound be\, and what happens when you approach theater not as a visual but as an auditory medium?” \nInterdisciplinary sound-artist and performer Görkem Arıkan will present Wirwarp (2024)\, a self-made instrument that draws inspiration from Michel Waisvisz’ distinctive approach to sonic interactions and musical expression. Wirwarp is made out of conductive rubber and cord stretch sensors that create a dynamic mesh on a wooden frame. Through warping and tangling the mesh-pulling cords\, pushing the nodes\, and adjusting the frame’s angle with moveable hinges\, Görkem is able to play the instrument\, turning it into a canvas for sonic exploration. \nElina Tapio will be DJ’ing during the evening. Her sets embody an experimental ethos\, favouring dark and eerie soundscapes\, blending psychedelic rhythms with industrial atmospheres. She is currently a resident at Mutant Radio\, and co-hosts the radio shows Scrying the Landscape and axia maxim. She has also released music under the moniker eoobe\, together with Marco Segato. \nGeke Zaal has provided the hypnotizing artwork for this installment. \nLoom is free for Subbacultcha and We Are Public members.\n– Subbacultcha members can reserve a free ticket by sending an email here with ‘Loom’ in the subject + your name in the text.\n– We Are Public members can reserve their free ticket here.\n– Regular tickets are €12 and can be purchased here. \nLoom is kindly supported by Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst & Fonds 21.
