SUMMARY:Dok night: LA ULTIMA CENA 1976 (The Last Supper) Directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea
DESCRIPTION:This film coming out of Cuba is a full-force blast against colonial slavery\, the hypocrisies of capitalism and the church. The angle is surrealist\, and the spirit is imaginary despite it being a razor-sharp social critique. It was directed by Cuba’s most prolific filmmaker Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (Fresa y chocolate). In a way\, many of his movies are about striking a balance between the individual and the collective. He was a radical film director who always questioned every institutionalized system\, it didn’t matter if it was a political system or a standardized formula of filmmaking. For this movie he cited Bertolt Brecht and Sergei Eisenstein as key influences\, and the focus of this flick is based on real events adapted from historical documents. \nWhat’s the story? One day a wealthy landlord gets drunk\, and since it’s Easter week\, he gathers twelve of his black slaves into his château\, and goes about staging the last supper of Christ. Along the way the slave-apostles are allowed to eat as much as they want from the banquet table\, as the slave-owner talks of charity and forgiveness. He also pontificates with arrogance about humility and the need for one to humbly accept one’s place in life. I will of course let the rest of the movie unfold for itself. It could be considered just a black comedy\, if it wasn’t for its barbed insights and more than a few hard punches along the way. It’s got that biting humor that can be found in Monty Python or Luis Buñuel. And just as with both of those references\, the film isn’t one-sided\, but also questions on a deeper level complicated issues about what is really freedom and what is really slavery. \nA film about the slave revolts\, balancing seriousness and absurdity. The film is broken into four segments—Ash Wednesday\, Maundy Thursday\, Good Friday and culminating on Easter Sunday. In de maand mei worden in Amsterdam gelijktijdig drie tentoonstellingen aan zijn werk gewijd. \nDe Encyclopedie van de Wereld volgens Erik Fens zal worden tentoongesteld in Plantage Dok aan de Plantage Doklaan 8 in Amsterdam op 3\, 4 en 5 mei a.s..  \nOp 3 mei wordt de tentoonstelling geopend met een openingswoord van schrijver Matthijs van Boxsel om 16.30\, gevolgd; de openingstijden op de andere dagen zijn van 13.00 tot 17.00 uur.  \nOp zondag 5 mei is er om 17.00 uur een optreden van Luc Ex/The Philosopher. \nVan 3 mei t/m 26 zal tegelijkertijd een tentoonstelling getiteld De verzamelkunst van Erik Fens te zien zijn in Galerie Weerdruk aan het Entrepotdok 42A. Also on the bill solo’s of two of the biggest improvising talents around: Alistair Payne (trumpet) and Lucija Gregov (cello). \n  \n  \nCRAIG TABORN \nNew York pianist Craig Taborn consistently captivates audiences with his performances. Fans of jazz\, contemporary classical\, and electronic music admire his detailed exploration of the piano’s sound. Especially since his solo album Avenging Angel\, he’s been recognized as one of the best jazz pianists alive by The New York Times\, de Volkskrant\, and more. Ten years after this landmark solo album\, Taborn released a second\, Shadow Play\, on ECM Records\, recorded live at the Mozart-Saal of the Wiener Konzerthaus. Taborn gained recognition through collaborations with James Carter and Roscoe Mitchell\, and he’s worked with peers like Vijay Iyer\, Chris Potter\, and Dave King\, drummer for The Bad Plus. \n  \nLUCIJA GREGOV \nLucija Gregov is a cellist\, improviser\, and sound artist whose work describes and explores new sonic landscapes\, integrating analogue synthesizers and field recordings into her compositions along the way. By engaging in interdisciplinary and often community-oriented work\, she pushes traditional cello boundaries\, creating a dynamic approach to her improvisation and sound art. \n  \nALISTAIR PAYNE \nAlistair Payne is a prominent figure in the Dutch jazz scene. Originally from Scotland\, the trumpeter operates beyond established norms. His use of extended techniques is a natural part of his playing\, where he embraces both physical and mental challenges. Eisenberg plays solo guitar as well as banjo in both acoustic and electric settings\, warped post-punk songs in the trio Editrix\,\ndelicately dangerous guitar music in the critically acclaimed Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet\, country-free jazz in the band Darlin’\, with Lester St. Louis and Ryan Sawyer\, febrile post-Prime Time free\njazz in Strictly Missionary\, and punk-prog in a trio with Trevor Dunn and Ches Smith. As Eisenberg told fellow guitarist Nick Millevoi in an interview for Premier Guitar in 2021\, “I need to be\nin a punk band at the same time as I need to be playing free improv\, at the same time as I need to be playing songs. Or meet new people at the bar. \n*** \nCome enjoy delicious food\, good company and support direct action against deportations. \nEvery day people are threatened with deportations from the Netherlands to countries they deliberately left and don’t want to go to. The dinner is in support of activists taking action against these racist practices. \nSolidarity actions are helping with legal procedures that may stop the deportation\, supporting people to stay out of the hands of deportation agencies and standing up on deportation flights. The latter form of action is a costly method.
