DESCRIPTION:We warmly invite you to a new performance by Petra Banke\, our current Artist in Residence. \n‘NOT A REAL GIRL. BUT STILL A GIRL’\nA dystopian fairytale by SciNonFi\nIn collaboration with Jan van Casteren en Maaike Hasselaar. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA cyborg girl is artificially kept alive by wires\, in a world where nothing lives or dies. SUMMARY:Dok Night - Symbiopsychotaxicinema _ DE CIERTA MANERA 1975 Directed by Sara Gómez
DESCRIPTION:SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA in Plantage Dok \nwith \nexpo by de Collagist Mario Kolk \n19:00 Vegan dinner by Suzie Creamcheese \, €10 cash only \n20:30 Free screening \n  \nDE CIERTA MANERA 1975 \n \n(One Way or Another)\nDirected by Sara Gómez\n77 minutes\nIn Spanish with English subtitles \nThis rarely screened film is a classic of Cuban cinema\, nailed by an Afro-Cuban woman—Sara Gómez—who only made a few short documentaries and this single feature\, in her short lifetime. She died at age 31 from complications involved with the birth of her child. Besides the personal tragedy of someone dying so young\, it was also sad because she was such a bold original talent\, and obviously had so much more to give. \nThis film is incredibly innovative and thoughtful… a radical mix between fact and fiction. The fiction part is a love affair between Mario and Yolanda who are very different from each other—a male factory worker and a female school teacher. But then there is the documentary edge that captures the entire world of Cuba in the 1970s. We see it all – the ground-level struggles to create a new society\, the contradictions\, the intense conversations of people on the street\, their dreams and loves. All in a country still trying to define what is revolutionary\, equal\, and humane in terms of race\, class and gender. In essence\, the everyday reality of the ongoing Cuban revolution from a woman’s perspective. \nA docu-film like this feels so free compared to anything being made today. It has these beautiful moments when it detours on a whim. It starts to explore one direction\, and then suddenly shifts and takes off in another style that is purely documentary. Because it can suddenly jump tracks so quickly\, it also captures a wider cross-section of the entire society. I also love the fact that our main character has flaws\, and we often question her convictions. An incredible snapshot of a society that is trying to transform and reinvent everything. \n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\nPlantage Doklaan 8-12\n20:30 -> Free screening\n19:00 -> Vegan dinner by Susie Creamcheese (€10\,- cash only)\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world.

SUMMARY:Water.Land.Justice. Tour with "Les Soulevements de la Terre"
DESCRIPTION:✊❤️‍🔥📢 Les Soulevements de la Terre will be in Amsterdam next week! At their stops across the NL\, Germany\, and the Czech Republic\, they will provide insights into their experiences\, strategies and forms of organization. \nIn France\, the @soulevements.de.la.terre (“uprisings of the earth”) movement is successfully fighting against destructive industrial infrastructure and for social justice. It is supported by a strong base of over 100\,000 small farmers\, trade unionists\, activists and residents of contested territories. \nDespite the extreme state repression against them\, the “Uprisings of the Earth” are an inspiring example of collective resistance. You may have seen the impactful pictures of the people protesting against the mega-bassines in Saint-Soline. \n🌱 This is a great opportunity to learn from the experiences of this strong grassroots alliance\, and to discuss and connect with activists across borders in the struggle for land & water justice. \n📌 Dokhuis (Plantage Doklaan 8)\, Amsterdam\n– VOKU from 18h (10€)\n– discussion with SdlT at 19:30h (free)

SUMMARY:'Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence' - book launch\, talk
DESCRIPTION:BOOK LAUNCH EVENT:\n‘Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence’ \n// free of charge // vegan food served from 19:00 at Dokhuis Gallerie \nTo our community resisting militarism\, occupation\, genocidal regimes and systems of power and violence:\nJoin us for the launch Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence\, a new collection of essays on the systems and technologies of surveillance\, control\, and violence behind oppressive border regimes around the world. \nWith an introduction from editor Mizue Aizeki. \nMatt Mahmoudi and Luke Naylor-Perott will share the research about ever-growing surveillance network which is entrenching the Israeli government’s control over Palestinians\, and helps to maintain Israel’s system of apartheid. \nStop The War on Migrants will tell us more about how they use mapping connections of the military and border industrial complex as an activist tool \n—————————————————— \nIn the name of “smart” borders\, states like the U.K.\, the U.S.\, and Israel have increasingly turned to private companies to develop a neocolonial laboratory deployed against the Global South\, across borderlands\, routes of migration\, and within their own borders. They have established immigrant databases\, digital IDs\, electronic tracking systems\, facial recognition software\, data fusion centres\, and more\, all to more “efficiently” categorise and control human beings and their movement. \nThese technologies rarely capture widespread public attention or outrage\, but they are quietly remaking our world\, scaling up colonial efforts of times past to divide desirables from undesirables\, rich from poor\, expat from migrant\, and citizen from undocumented. The essays and case studies in Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence from organisers\, scholars\, and journalists such as Harsha Walia\, Ruha Benjamin\, Marwa Fatafta\, Arun Kundnani and many more shed light on this threat\, offering analyses of how the high-tech system of borders developed and inspiring stories of resistance to it. \nFree entrance!

\n\nAmarins Maan is singer songwriter. \n\nDrawing by Jonathan Pieter Post-Uiterweer. \nEmerging in the 1920s\, Rebetiko tells stories of the rural exodus and Greeks uprooted during the Greco-Turkish War’s 1922 population exchange. The merging of cultures resulted in a musical cross-fertilization that rapidly spread through the burgeoning suburbs of Athens\, Thessaloniki\, and Piraeus. Rebetiko lyrics touch upon themes of exile\, heartbreak\, suffering\, and social exclusion. Under the dictatorship of Ioannis Metaxas\, Rebetiko was branded as immoral\, and its proponents (rebetes) were imprisoned\, instruments were smashed\, and songs were censored. Despite all of this\, Rebetiko flourished\, was extensively recorded\, and is nowpopular once more\, with its themes remaining highly relevant today. \nIn the summer of 2022\, Méla (voice) and Johannes (lavta/bouzouki) delved deep into the soul of Rebetiko at Music Village\, Agios Lavrentios\, Greece. They now regularly jam with the Aman Molli open collective workshop at Joes Garage. This evening\, Elèni (ud\, voice)\, Anastasis (guitar) and Giannis (baglamas) will join us. We invite you all to join us and embrace the spirit of the rebetes. \ninstagram • spotify • youtube

SUMMARY:Dok Night - SOY CUBA 1964 (I am Cuba) Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov + Si Paton
DESCRIPTION:Dok night with … \nSymbiopsychotaxicinema in the Dokzaal \nSOY CUBA   1964\n(I am Cuba)\nDirected by Mikhail Kalatozov\n141 minutes\nIn Spanish with English subtitles \n“Don’t avert your eyes. Look! I am Cuba. For you\, I am the casino\, the bar\, hotels and brothels. But the hands of these children and old people are also me!” – Yevgeni Yevtushenko \nThis unique collaboration between Russian director Mikhail Kalatozov (The Cranes are Flying)\, and poet Yevgeni Yevtushenko dramatizes the conditions that led to the 1959 Cuban revolution. Originally made in 1964\, it was re-released in 1995 through the combined efforts of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. It has some of the most amazing cinematography in the history of cinema. \nI Am Cuba is set in the late 1950s when a bunch of students\, workers\, and peasants organized to overthrow the corrupt regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista. The film is divided into four sequences. The first depicts the American gambling casinos and brothels in Havana. The next part shows a farmer burning his sugar cane when he learns he is going to lose his land to the American United Fruit company. Another part describes the suppression of students and dissenters at Havana University\, and the final sequence shows how government bombing of mountain fields induced farmers to join with the rebels in the mountains. The final scene is a march into Havana to proclaim the revolution. This film has become a classic in film history\, and what makes it so great is that it is not only revolutionary in its theme\, but also in its wonderful incandescent style. The narration was written by Russian poet Yevgeni Yevtushenko. \nPhotographed in black and white and using acrobatic camerawork\, some of the shots and distorted camera angles are so staggering they are virtually unbelievable. In one sequence\, the camera lifts off from a hotel rooftop\, takes in the Havana skyline\, descends several floors\, winds its way through the poolside party-goers\, and then takes you for a swim in the pool in one continuous shot. (Paul Thomas Anderson loved this shot so much he made a tribute to it in Boogie Nights). Audacious and imaginative\, I Am Cuba is a revelation. Filmed with true visionary poetry\, it transcends the genre of political filmmaking and reaches a pinnacle of cinematic art….pure exhilarated cinema in its highest form. \n‘A fever dream\, a plunging rollercoaster ride\, a cinematographer’s hallucination\, a love song to the power of cinema.” \n  \n \nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. \n  \n+ \nvegan meals by Susie Creamcheese \n+ \nmusic performance by Si Paton in the basement \n  \n  \n \nSi Paton is a composer\, bassist\, academic and general smart mouthed antagonist. He has completed his PhD at Birmingham Conservatoire under the supervision of Ed Bennett and Seán Clancy\, researching composition for improvising large ensembles searching for a shared musical language between different stylistic origins. He has previously studied electric bass and jazz composition at University of West London with Paul Westwood and Eddie Harvey. He has played in groups – most notably the math-rock band Selectric\, the trans-atlantic no wave outfit Phame\, and his duo with drummer Rob Nettleship – done composition based projects\, and regularly performs solo improvised sets. His solo performances have seen him tread the waters between free jazz\, noise\, avant-rock\, contemporary classical and performance art. You might find him being a dedicated disciple of free jazz one minute\, and then the next rolling around on the floor\, playing his bass with a screwdriver\, reciting wrestling promos\, or engaging in staring contests with audience members. You never quite know what exactly you’re going to get and the unpredictableness is what makes his music stand out.

SUMMARY:Dok night: LA ULTIMA CENA 1976 (The Last Supper) Directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea
DESCRIPTION:This film coming out of Cuba is a full-force blast against colonial slavery\, the hypocrisies of capitalism and the church. The angle is surrealist\, and the spirit is imaginary despite it being a razor-sharp social critique. It was directed by Cuba’s most prolific filmmaker Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (Fresa y chocolate). In a way\, many of his movies are about striking a balance between the individual and the collective. He was a radical film director who always questioned every institutionalized system\, it didn’t matter if it was a political system or a standardized formula of filmmaking. For this movie he cited Bertolt Brecht and Sergei Eisenstein as key influences\, and the focus of this flick is based on real events adapted from historical documents. \nWhat’s the story? One day a wealthy landlord gets drunk\, and since it’s Easter week\, he gathers twelve of his black slaves into his château\, and goes about staging the last supper of Christ. Along the way the slave-apostles are allowed to eat as much as they want from the banquet table\, as the slave-owner talks of charity and forgiveness. He also pontificates with arrogance about humility and the need for one to humbly accept one’s place in life. I will of course let the rest of the movie unfold for itself. It could be considered just a black comedy\, if it wasn’t for its barbed insights and more than a few hard punches along the way. It’s got that biting humor that can be found in Monty Python or Luis Buñuel. And just as with both of those references\, the film isn’t one-sided\, but also questions on a deeper level complicated issues about what is really freedom and what is really slavery. \nA film about the slave revolts\, balancing seriousness and absurdity. The film is broken into four segments—Ash Wednesday\, Maundy Thursday\, Good Friday and culminating on Easter Sunday. In other words\, this is a perfect time of year to see this flick. \n\n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\nPlantage Doklaan 8-12\nFilm starts at 20:30\nFree screening   Dinners are available from 19:00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. \nGalerie Weerdruk: Martin Veltman (info@weerdruk.nl) \nwww.weerdruk.nl \nDr. Sarphatihuis: Nickel Didde (n.didde@amsta.nl) \nwww.erikfens.nl/verzamelingen

SUMMARY:Finissage TENTOON- STELLING ERIK FENS MET OPtreden van Luc Ex\, The Philosopher
