SUMMARY:World's Appreciated Kitch & Rope or Guillotine | Chain Whip
DESCRIPTION:World’s Appreciated Kitch & Rope or Guillotine will deliver you another insane punk show in the centre of Amsterdam.\nChain Whip \nhttps://chainwhip.bandcamp.com/album/14-lashes\n“Like a door opening to an alternate universe where Suburban Mutilation released the most influential hardcore LP of the 80s\, and DOA were conveniently disappeared so the melody cum velocity and Richard Nixon-esque gargle of Joey Shithead could be reimagined in the various voids of the Twenty-teens as tidy new hc punk lp by CHAIN WHIP. Not fast enough to only be brutal\, but not modest enough to be anything but pummelling. Full of burly\, crunchy\, tight corners\, this is the musical equivalent of thrifting an Eames chair — you recognize it a mile away\, it’s still a classic\, and it’s just landed in our laps for next to nothing.” \n– Jonah Falco\nTraumatizer\nNew hardcore band from Amsterdam and Haarlem\, crazy shit. dbeat in your face. folks from Asbest boys and Burlers.\nBlind Ambition\nAnother new band from Amsterdam with folks you might know from Vitamin X and Betercore. Hardcore punks a gogo!\nMonday night\, lets go!\nNo pre-sale

SUMMARY:Dok Night | Symbiopsychotaxicinema & art by Yehudit Mizrahi Dar
DESCRIPTION:18:00 Bar open\n \n*** \nArt work by Yehudit Mizrahi Dar \n  \n*** \n19:00 Vegan Food by susie Creamcheese (€ 10 / cash only) \n*** \n20:30 Symbiopsychotaxicinema \nWINTER ADE   1989\nDirected by Helke Misselwitz\n116 minutes\nIn German with English subtitles \n \nAfter World War II\, documentary filmmaking was extremely strong in the former East block – in countries like Poland\, Czechoslovakia and the GDR. In some ways\, documentaries offered more grounding – they were dealing with real life and what was really happening on the streets\, in contrast to Hollywood feature films that were always fantasies. That is certainly true of this particularly rich and complex film. Made just one year before the Berlin Wall was brought crashing down\, it gives us a piercing image of the situation in East Germany in the late ’80s.\n\nHere we sink into the heart of that culture\, as a female filmmaker gets on a train and travels the length and breath of her country. She stops off at different cities and villages and explores the stories of how women are living in the GDR. We see how their living conditions were unsurprisingly more limited than in the West\, since the GDR was in no way a colonialist nation raking in profits from other lands. And although the role of women was by far better off in the GDR in contrast to their counterparts in West Germany\, still by the late 80s a kind of stagnation had settled in.\n\nDirector Helke Misselwitz travels to the Baltic coast\, to the Czechoslovakian border\, and to East Berlin. She finds a lot of disillusionment in the women she interviews who cross her path\, but she also finds optimism. We meet women from all walks of life\, and all different ages – from an 83-year old\, to a couple of runaway punks in Berlin. Insightful and playful (we even visit a doll hospital along the way)\, this is a terrific time capsule\, a vivid and lively snap-shot of a time and place that is now totally lost to us.

SUMMARY:Dok Night | MOLK Night
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday November 23rd\, we are hosting a night of Solidarity for Palestine\nCome |  Watch | Donate \nVegan food by artist and Chef Alejandra Lopez from 19:00\nFilm screening “Foragers” By Jumana Manna 21:00 \nAll donations will go to doctors without borders\nDONATION\nfrom €5 to €…. what you can\n\nFILM “Foragers”\nby Jumana MannaForagers depicts the dramas around the practice of foraging for wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel with wry humor and a meditative pace. Shot in the Golan Heights\, the Galilee and Jerusalem\, it employs fiction\, documentary and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. The restrictions prohibit the collection of the artichoke-like ’akkoub and za’atar (thyme)\, and have resulted in fines and trials for hundreds caught collecting these native plants. For Palestinians\, these laws constitute an ecological veil for legislation that further alienates them from their land while Israeli state representatives insist on their scientific expertise and duty to protect. Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen\, from the chases between the foragers and the nature patrol\, to courtroom defenses\, Foragers captures the joy and knowledge embodied in these traditions alongside their resilience to the prohibitive law. By reframing the terms and constraints of preservation\, the film raises questions around the politics of extinction\, namely who determines what is made extinct and what gets to live on. \n\n+\nexhibition by\nYehudit Mizrahi Dar

SUMMARY:Dok Night / SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA
DESCRIPTION:PETIT A PETIT  1970 \n\n\n\n  \n(Little by little)\nDirected by Jean Rouch\n96 minutes\nIn French with English subtitles \n\nJean Rouch was a cinema-anthropologist who went to west Africa and fell in love with it. When he saw first-hand what colonization had done to the continent\, he decided to dismantle those power games and created his own ethnographic field  called ‘shared anthropology’. But for him\, if he was going to be sincere\, he knew that the real problem wasn’t in Africa but in his home country France. So he often returned to France and made films that were critical of the assumptions and arrogance of the European mindset. Because of his character\, he didn’t do this in a dark and angry way\, but reflecting what he loved in West African communities\, he did it in a playful way. \nIn this movie he brings a group of his friends from Niger to Paris\, including one of his favorite characters Damouré Zika. The fictional set up is that they want to come and look at building construction as businessmen\, but the collective film actually is a critique of modern French life and capitalist society. As with all of this director’s films it’s a collaborative ‘shared’ effort and borders on the absurd and surreal. It is an example of another genre Jean Rouch launched\, described as ‘docu-fiction’. This film was made spontaneously—little by little—as a collective… and therefore reflects a foreigner’s view on the insanity and ridiculousness of French culture and the modern world. You can bet it was also a deep learning experience for director Rouch as he went around the city he knew so well\, and listened and learned from his friends and saw it through their eyes. \nJean Rouch’s films were groundbreaking culturally\, and had a huge impact on cinema even though his name is rarely mentioned these days. Two of the five principal directors of the French New Wave of the 60s—Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette—both pointed to films of Jean Rouch as the principal influence that ignited the entire Nouvelle Vague. The fusing together of fiction and documentary\, the use of handheld cameras\, shooting in the streets\, improvisation\, independence and nonlinear editing were principal aspects of his work that would be picked up by the so-called ‘young Turk’ filmmakers. \n\n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\nPlantage Doklaan 8-12\n20:30\nFree screening  \nDinners are available from 19:00\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world.

SUMMARY:Dok Night - Symbiopsychotaxicinema --> MEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT   1968
DESCRIPTION:18:00  Bar open  \n19:00 Vegan meals by Suzie Creamcheese \n20:30 film screening by SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA \n  \nMEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT   1968\n(Memorias del Subdesarrollo)\nDirected by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea\n104 minutes\nIn Spanish with English subtitles \n \nOnce upon a time there was an event called the “Bay of Pigs”—an attempted overthrow of the Cuban government by the American CIA. It ended in utter disaster for the Americans\, and caused the deaths of many Cubans. This semi-fictional movie made in Cuba\, starts up just after this fiasco\, and the constant threat of foreign invasion is still lingering in the air throughout the film. America’s attacks on Cuba should not be seen outside of the lens of colonization\, because that’s exactly how the country was founded – people throwing out foreign corporations that were exploiting them and taking back their own land. Curiously\, the only piece of Cuba still annexed by America is a place called Guantánamo Bay and it is still today being used as a torture chamber. \nWhat we have here is our main character Sergio\, an intellectual and an artist\, who remains aloof to the backdrop of the social events that are unfolding. He is more interested in women and art than politics. But nevertheless\, the post-revolutionary situation that was exploding in Cuba is the backdrop\, and is vividly documented. This brings up a theme that runs through many of Cuban director Alea’s films—the conflict between personal desire and social urgency. Absorbing influences from European cinema\, Alea’s style is free-wheeling – fusing fiction with documentary footage\, poetic images\, literary narration\, flashbacks and montages of 1960s life in Havana. \nThrough the story of Sergio’s life we also see the early revolutionary days of Cuba\, and the problems it faced. Sergio’s wife leaves him for a more secure life in the States\, as do many of his friends and neighbors. So this is a fiction film\, based on the book by Edmundo Desnoës\, that directly addresses the real situation in Cuba during the heat of explosive turmoil… and the amazing result seems surprisingly open and honest\, with a big question mark at the end about the future of Cuba. It’s considered by many to be the best Cuban film ever made\, and one of the greatest films of the 1960s new wave era that was sweeping through Latin America. \nThis will be a high-definition screening. \n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays.

SUMMARY:Dok Night - Symbiopsychotaxicinema _ DE CIERTA MANERA 1975 Directed by Sara Gómez
DESCRIPTION:SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA in Plantage Dok \nwith \nexpo by de Collagist Mario Kolk \n19:00 Vegan dinner by Suzie Creamcheese \, €10 cash only \n20:30 Free screening \n  \nDE CIERTA MANERA 1975 \n \n(One Way or Another)\nDirected by Sara Gómez\n77 minutes\nIn Spanish with English subtitles \nThis rarely screened film is a classic of Cuban cinema\, nailed by an Afro-Cuban woman—Sara Gómez—who only made a few short documentaries and this single feature\, in her short lifetime. She died at age 31 from complications involved with the birth of her child. Besides the personal tragedy of someone dying so young\, it was also sad because she was such a bold original talent\, and obviously had so much more to give. \nThis film is incredibly innovative and thoughtful… a radical mix between fact and fiction. The fiction part is a love affair between Mario and Yolanda who are very different from each other—a male factory worker and a female school teacher. But then there is the documentary edge that captures the entire world of Cuba in the 1970s. We see it all – the ground-level struggles to create a new society\, the contradictions\, the intense conversations of people on the street\, their dreams and loves. All in a country still trying to define what is revolutionary\, equal\, and humane in terms of race\, class and gender. In essence\, the everyday reality of the ongoing Cuban revolution from a woman’s perspective. \nA docu-film like this feels so free compared to anything being made today. It has these beautiful moments when it detours on a whim. It starts to explore one direction\, and then suddenly shifts and takes off in another style that is purely documentary. Because it can suddenly jump tracks so quickly\, it also captures a wider cross-section of the entire society. I also love the fact that our main character has flaws\, and we often question her convictions. An incredible snapshot of a society that is trying to transform and reinvent everything. \n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\nPlantage Doklaan 8-12\n20:30 -> Free screening\n19:00 -> Vegan dinner by Susie Creamcheese (€10\,- cash only)\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays.

SUMMARY:Water.Land.Justice. Tour with "Les Soulevements de la Terre"
DESCRIPTION:✊❤️‍🔥📢 Les Soulevements de la Terre will be in Amsterdam next week! At their stops across the NL\, Germany\, and the Czech Republic\, they will provide insights into their experiences\, strategies and forms of organization. \nIn France\, the @soulevements.de.la.terre (“uprisings of the earth”) movement is successfully fighting against destructive industrial infrastructure and for social justice. It is supported by a strong base of over 100\,000 small farmers\, trade unionists\, activists and residents of contested territories. \nDespite the extreme state repression against them\, the “Uprisings of the Earth” are an inspiring example of collective resistance. You may have seen the impactful pictures of the people protesting against the mega-bassines in Saint-Soline. \n🌱 This is a great opportunity to learn from the experiences of this strong grassroots alliance\, and to discuss and connect with activists across borders in the struggle for land & water justice. \n📌 Dokhuis (Plantage Doklaan 8)\, Amsterdam\n– VOKU from 18h (10€)\n– discussion with SdlT at 19:30h (free)

SUMMARY:'Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence' - book launch\, talk
DESCRIPTION:BOOK LAUNCH EVENT:\n‘Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence’ \n// free of charge // vegan food served from 19:00 at Dokhuis Gallerie \nTo our community resisting militarism\, occupation\, genocidal regimes and systems of power and violence:\nJoin us for the launch Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence\, a new collection of essays on the systems and technologies of surveillance\, control\, and violence behind oppressive border regimes around the world. \nWith an introduction from editor Mizue Aizeki. \nMatt Mahmoudi and Luke Naylor-Perott will share the research about ever-growing surveillance network which is entrenching the Israeli government’s control over Palestinians\, and helps to maintain Israel’s system of apartheid. \nStop The War on Migrants will tell us more about how they use mapping connections of the military and border industrial complex as an activist tool \n—————————————————— \nIn the name of “smart” borders\, states like the U.K.\, the U.S.\, and Israel have increasingly turned to private companies to develop a neocolonial laboratory deployed against the Global South\, across borderlands\, routes of migration\, and within their own borders. They have established immigrant databases\, digital IDs\, electronic tracking systems\, facial recognition software\, data fusion centres\, and more\, all to more “efficiently” categorise and control human beings and their movement. \nThese technologies rarely capture widespread public attention or outrage\, but they are quietly remaking our world\, scaling up colonial efforts of times past to divide desirables from undesirables\, rich from poor\, expat from migrant\, and citizen from undocumented. The essays and case studies in Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence from organisers\, scholars\, and journalists such as Harsha Walia\, Ruha Benjamin\, Marwa Fatafta\, Arun Kundnani and many more shed light on this threat\, offering analyses of how the high-tech system of borders developed and inspiring stories of resistance to it. \nFree entrance!
