DESCRIPTION:Rope or Guillotine & World’s Appreciated Kitsch provide you with food & bands! \n \n18:00 Vegan Food\n \n*** \n20:o0 First band \nSMIRK (Los Angeles\, California\, USA)\nAs the Decline of Western Civilization comes into full focus\, our ears turn once again to Los Angeles. The first proper full length from Smirk could very well be the soundtrack to a Decline pt. IV\, with tracks like “Living in Hell” and “Hopeless” delivered for a whole new generation of latchkey kids. \nBut if you’re wondering where the magic is – let’s start with pure\, quality songwriting. Vicario and his revolving cast of Smirk players have really done it this time. It’s punk\, California\, paranoia\, guitars\, rhythm\, and a sense of humor-slash-purpose joining forces to combat reality in the truest sense.\nhttps://smirk1.bandcamp.com\n\nDISHES (Amsterdam & Leiden\, Netherlands)\nAmsterdam and Leiden based band. SUMMARY:Global Climate Jobs Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Conference Program\nAt the 2023 Global Climate Jobs Conference\, we will bring together everyone who wants to take part in the challenging but pressuring task of building social power to stop climate change. We want to move from policy discussions to action. We seek to set a conference for frank and ambitious discussions on working-class organizing\, alliance and movement building and political strategy\, towards Climate Jobs and Ecological Unionism. \nIn this conference\, we will build on three pillars of questions: \n\nProgram: What is the progressive agenda and policy proposals to face the multiple social and climate crises? What does a political program compatible with climate science and driven towards social justice looks like?\nStrategy: What do these political proposals mean to our movements and organizations strategically? What is the left plan for power? What do different organizations need from each other to build strong alliances? How will we organize to win?\nNarrative: How will we communicate our agenda? How do we show people what we are fighting for? How can we gain broad support for progressive proposals?\n\nAnd these will be structured in 3 kinds of sessions: Panel Discussions (interventions by invited speakers)\, Plenary Sessions (open and facilitated discussions with all of the participants)\, and Parallel Sessions (workshops session or focus discussion proposed by participants and organizations). \nThe Panel Discussions will set the key questions and present some key experiences and learning\, from which the parallel sessions can build on. The parallel sessions will then further develop some of the content. And plenary sessions will be used to share\, amongst all participants\, some of the main discussions and conclusions coming out of the parallel sessions. \nOn the final day (narrative) the workshop session will be focused on real cases for implementation of the learning from the previous days\, and to take forward key discussions and proposals. The plenary will then allow participants to share the results of the implementation sessions. \nFor program\, info and tickets visit: https://www.globalclimatejobs.org/conference-2023/

SUMMARY:Encounter with delegates from the Indigenous National Council (CNI) and the Center of Human Rights Fray Bartolomé de las Casas (Frayba) - Mexico
DESCRIPTION:How can the struggle from indigenous communities in Mexico concern us? Which are the invisible threads that weave together the struggles?During this event we will welcome the delegation of the Indigenous National Council (CNI) and the Center of Human Rights Fray Bartolomé de las Casas (Frayba) to share their stories of struggle. This event is a continuation of the Zapatista Journey for Life that happened in the Netherlands two years ago\, and organized by Gira Holanda.Because whenever there is oppression there is resistance\, the CNI and Frayba are traveling through Slumil K’ajxemk’op\, the Land that Does Not Surrender\, the Europe from Below\, to weave and strenghten networks of solidarity in defense of life\, here and there.During this evening we invite collectives\, organizations and individuals to gather and to continue weaving networks of solidarity in defense of life. We will create a space where the delegation can share their words\, struggles and perspectives; and where these can be mirrored and resonated by the struggles and realities lived in the Netherlands. Besides the dialogue\, questions and contributions\, there will be music\, drinks\, and merchandise tocollect funds to support the tour of delegation members from Mexico to the Netherlands\, and throughout Europe.Check the instagram post from Gira Holanda for further details on the importance of this gathering: https://www.instagram.com/giraholanda/?hl=fr&img_index=1Program of the evening:7.00-7.30 – Welcome 7.30-8.45pm – Open space for CNI and Fraybe delegates to share their stories8.45-9pm – Break9-10pm – Facilitated discussion and Q&A 10-11pm – Cumbia (Dj tba)Please amplify\, sharing is caring! SUMMARY:Dok Night | Symbiopsychotaxicinema
DESCRIPTION:18:00 Bar open\n \n*** \n19:00 Vegan Food (€ 10 / cash only) \n*** \n20:30 Symbiopsychotaxicinema \nFilms for Those Who Care \nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock \nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n  \n \nTRINITY AND BEYOND  1995\nDirected by Peter Kuran\n93 minutes\nIn English \n\nOf course the hit summer movie Oppenheimer was a huge production\, but in some ways all that hugeness skirted behind many details\, was beating around the bush\, and wasn’t really dealing with the core issues. In that way it was a bit like “the sound in the fury\, in the end signifying nothing”. This documentary was collected together by Peter Kuran\, the guy who did all the special effects on the first Star Wars movie. It is considered by many to be the best film dealing with the development and testing of the atomic bomb. \nToday people are no longer haunted by the prospect of a nuclear war\, even though we are closer to it than ever before in history. Somehow the commodity culture and overwhelming consumerism of the society we live in\, with all its bright colors and its rapidly moving messages\, prevents people from really focusing on\, and understanding the bigger picture. And in that way the idea of a nuclear war seems remote and is trivialized. If we’re not careful\, then it won’t only be our minds that are a mess\, but our entire existence will be blasted to the wind. This movie intends to change our current mindset\, and help us understand what a powerful force of nature a nuclear explosion really is. The immensity of what we see is staggering. \nThis acclaimed flick dives into the beginnings of the creation of the nuclear bomb\, bringing in declassified archival material that wasn’t available until recently. For director Peter Kuran this was not a commercial project\, but a personal one. One of his aims was to expose footage that had been hidden for 50 years\, but also to preserve material that the United States government was intentionally allowing to deteriorate and therefore disappear forever. So one of the astounding things about this film is how much work was put into cleaning up the images and reviving them so that they have a new vitality and relevancy… the images don’t look old\, worn out or dated\, and in fact come close to a big budget studio production. \nI should point out that the film meticulously covers\, step-by-step\, the development and production of these bombs along with their detonation. The point of the film is understanding the horror of this development\, and doesn’t harp on images of human violence. Narrated by William Shatner (Star trek) it also features an original score performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra that has a kind of explosive dark beauty to it. \nThis will be a high definition projection. \n\n\nFree screening

SUMMARY:Instant Composers Pool Krokettenfestijn - BIMHUIS & Space Is The Place
\nMichael Moore saxofoon/klarinet\, Ab Baars saxofoon/klarinet\, Tobias Delius tenorsax\, Joost Buis trombone\, Thomas Heberer trompet\, Mary Oliver viool/altviool\, Guus Janssen piano\, Ernst Glerum bas\, Han Bennink drums \nSUN-MI HONG & ALISTAIR PAYNE\nTrompet en drums vormen een ongebruikelijke bezetting. \nhttps://www.bimhuis.nl/agenda/instant-composers-pool-kroketten-festijn/\nhttps://spaceistheplace.eu/website/

SUMMARY:Dok Night - Open for food and drinks ** MUSIC NIGHT AND BENEFIT ARE CANCELLED **
DESCRIPTION:Dok is open tonight for food and drinks starting at 18u. Check here for the latest news.\nThe music night and benefit are CANCELLED because of the storm. \n\nAmarins Maan is singer songwriter. \n\nDrawing by Jonathan Pieter Post-Uiterweer. \nEmerging in the 1920s\, Rebetiko tells stories of the rural exodus and Greeks uprooted during the Greco-Turkish War’s 1922 population exchange. The merging of cultures resulted in a musical cross-fertilization that rapidly spread through the burgeoning suburbs of Athens\, Thessaloniki\, and Piraeus. Rebetiko lyrics touch upon themes of exile\, heartbreak\, suffering\, and social exclusion. Under the dictatorship of Ioannis Metaxas\, Rebetiko was branded as immoral\, and its proponents (rebetes) were imprisoned\, instruments were smashed\, and songs were censored. Despite all of this\, Rebetiko flourished\, was extensively recorded\, and is nowpopular once more\, with its themes remaining highly relevant today. \nIn the summer of 2022\, Méla (voice) and Johannes (lavta/bouzouki) delved deep into the soul of Rebetiko at Music Village\, Agios Lavrentios\, Greece. They now regularly jam with the Aman Molli open collective workshop at Joes Garage. This evening\, Eleni (ud\, voice)\, Anastasis (guitar) and Giannis (baglama) will join us. We invite you all to join us and embrace the spirit of the rebetes. \ninstagram • spotify • youtube

SUMMARY:Dok Night Benefit dinner for ELSC
DESCRIPTION:Benefit dinner for ELSC\nThursday night 9th November 2023\n\nThe genocide in Gaza is being live-streamed before our eyes while we are witnessing the imperialist forces (USA\, UK\, EUROPE) not only turning their backs on the Palestinian’s lives and rights\, but also actively supporting the criminal actions of Israel.\n\nFurthermore\, they are systematically pushing the silencing and persecution of Palestinian voices\, solidarity and activism on their territories. Demonstrations are getting banned and hundreds of protesters are being arrested in Germany\, France and other countries just for calling to stop the genocide and putting an end to the atrocious crimes of the settler apartheid state.\n\n(ELSC) European Legal Support Center is providing free legal support to Palestinian rights advocates in Europe whose rights are being violated every day and monitoring/documenting all forms of repression against them. The rise of oppression in Europe is causing them to be overloaded with many cases\, and our support is urgently needed.\n\nDinner made by Mody (@mahmmoudie )\n– Egyptian Moussaka \n– Lentil soup\n\n> Please bring cash for the food\, atm nearby!. Exploring spilling\, leaking\, ‘loud women’\, resonant architecture\, and the use of the mouth\, ear and body as sites of hysteria\, danger and pleasure. The evening features all new and site-specific work by a team of female-identifying artists with cross-disciplinary practices rooted in live performance. Imagining the space of Dokzaal as a body orifice or a reverberation chamber\, all contributors tap into an emotionally charged landscape through embodiment: the silencing of femme voices\, failed attempts at being heard and soft transgression. \nMoa Holgersson is a visual and performance artist and the curator of CAVERNOUS. She will perform an adaptation and expansion of a series of compositions made under the moniker FRÖ/The Lure. Navigating a set of solidified liquids\, her primary weapon to pierce through a crowd is her voice: singing\, growling\, screaming\, calling — Moa stretches the different registers and archetypes connected to femme vocalisation.@animalofcenter \nThalia Livingstone is a dancer\, choreographer\, curator and ex-architect working at the intersection of many things\, attempting to share the ungraspable. Her work seeks to outline the illusive\, often surfacing themes of neuro-divergence and feminism. For this piece\, Thalia has assigned herself a mission: to understand what it really is that she is trying to say. And to say it.Despite the objective seeming impossible to complete\, Thalia prepares. Using the tools at hand\, she attempts to recruit allies through seduction\, communicate her needs through text\, and train her body rigorously — only to encounter obstruction after obstruction.Holding a bouquet of failed attempts\, she endures… but will she hit her target before her tank is empty?@thalia_aliaht \nShow Pony is the experimental pop persona of double bassist\, singer and composer Laura Nygren. During CAVERNOUS she will present I May Fall Into the Sound\, an audio visual work exploring the disappearing island of Massancummock through the gaze of her memory and fantasy. Together with visual artists Tatiana Rosa and Ninay Kay she has constructed a fanciful version of Massancumock. The audience witnesses real time decay of the place through musical memories and field recordings.Massancummock is a tiny island\, home to the endangered roseate tern\, off the coast of Guilford\, Connecticut\, USA. It is projected to disappear into the surrounding sea by 2026. The trio uses the island as a lens for witnessing communal physical erosion — whether the loss of our home\, body or planet.@show_pony__ \nSnailaway explores the topics of memory\, trauma and out-of-body experiences through film\, writing\, music and performance\, by following methodologies of somatics and body-politics\, borrowing tactics of mental health therapy\, as well as consciousness-expanding practices such as psychedelics and non-duality.Inside of the morphing space of Dokzaal\, Snailaway/Frederique Pissuise will play a contagious DJ-set to close the evening of CAVERNOUS\, utilising storytelling and somatic trance.@frederique_pisuisse \nXiomara Virdó is a visual artist and performer based in Amsterdam. SUMMARY:Dok Night | Symbiopsychotaxicinema & art by Yehudit Mizrahi Dar
DESCRIPTION:18:00 Bar open\n \n*** \nArt work by Yehudit Mizrahi Dar \n  \n*** \n19:00 Vegan Food by susie Creamcheese (€ 10 / cash only) \n*** \n20:30 Symbiopsychotaxicinema \nWINTER ADE   1989\nDirected by Helke Misselwitz\n116 minutes\nIn German with English subtitles \n \nAfter World War II\, documentary filmmaking was extremely strong in the former East block – in countries like Poland\, Czechoslovakia and the GDR. In some ways\, documentaries offered more grounding – they were dealing with real life and what was really happening on the streets\, in contrast to Hollywood feature films that were always fantasies. That is certainly true of this particularly rich and complex film. Made just one year before the Berlin Wall was brought crashing down\, it gives us a piercing image of the situation in East Germany in the late ’80s.\n\nHere we sink into the heart of that culture\, as a female filmmaker gets on a train and travels the length and breath of her country. She stops off at different cities and villages and explores the stories of how women are living in the GDR. We see how their living conditions were unsurprisingly more limited than in the West\, since the GDR was in no way a colonialist nation raking in profits from other lands. And although the role of women was by far better off in the GDR in contrast to their counterparts in West Germany\, still by the late 80s a kind of stagnation had settled in.\n\nDirector Helke Misselwitz travels to the Baltic coast\, to the Czechoslovakian border\, and to East Berlin. She finds a lot of disillusionment in the women she interviews who cross her path\, but she also finds optimism. We meet women from all walks of life\, and all different ages – from an 83-year old\, to a couple of runaway punks in Berlin. Insightful and playful (we even visit a doll hospital along the way)\, this is a terrific time capsule\, a vivid and lively snap-shot of a time and place that is now totally lost to us.

SUMMARY:Dok Night | MOLK Night
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday November 23rd\, we are hosting a night of Solidarity for Palestine\nCome |  Watch | Donate \nVegan food by artist and Chef Alejandra Lopez from 19:00\nFilm screening “Foragers” By Jumana Manna 21:00 \nAll donations will go to doctors without borders\nDONATION\nfrom €5 to €…. what you can\n\nFILM “Foragers”\nby Jumana MannaForagers depicts the dramas around the practice of foraging for wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel with wry humor and a meditative pace. Shot in the Golan Heights\, the Galilee and Jerusalem\, it employs fiction\, documentary and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. The restrictions prohibit the collection of the artichoke-like ’akkoub and za’atar (thyme)\, and have resulted in fines and trials for hundreds caught collecting these native plants. For Palestinians\, these laws constitute an ecological veil for legislation that further alienates them from their land while Israeli state representatives insist on their scientific expertise and duty to protect. Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen\, from the chases between the foragers and the nature patrol\, to courtroom defenses\, Foragers captures the joy and knowledge embodied in these traditions alongside their resilience to the prohibitive law. By reframing the terms and constraints of preservation\, the film raises questions around the politics of extinction\, namely who determines what is made extinct and what gets to live on. \n\n+\nexhibition by\nYehudit Mizrahi Dar

SUMMARY:Dok Night / SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA
DESCRIPTION:PETIT A PETIT  1970 \n\n\n\n  \n(Little by little)\nDirected by Jean Rouch\n96 minutes\nIn French with English subtitles \n\nJean Rouch was a cinema-anthropologist who went to west Africa and fell in love with it. When he saw first-hand what colonization had done to the continent\, he decided to dismantle those power games and created his own ethnographic field  called ‘shared anthropology’. But for him\, if he was going to be sincere\, he knew that the real problem wasn’t in Africa but in his home country France. So he often returned to France and made films that were critical of the assumptions and arrogance of the European mindset. Because of his character\, he didn’t do this in a dark and angry way\, but reflecting what he loved in West African communities\, he did it in a playful way. \nIn this movie he brings a group of his friends from Niger to Paris\, including one of his favorite characters Damouré Zika. The fictional set up is that they want to come and look at building construction as businessmen\, but the collective film actually is a critique of modern French life and capitalist society. As with all of this director’s films it’s a collaborative ‘shared’ effort and borders on the absurd and surreal. It is an example of another genre Jean Rouch launched\, described as ‘docu-fiction’. This film was made spontaneously—little by little—as a collective… and therefore reflects a foreigner’s view on the insanity and ridiculousness of French culture and the modern world. You can bet it was also a deep learning experience for director Rouch as he went around the city he knew so well\, and listened and learned from his friends and saw it through their eyes. \nJean Rouch’s films were groundbreaking culturally\, and had a huge impact on cinema even though his name is rarely mentioned these days. Two of the five principal directors of the French New Wave of the 60s—Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette—both pointed to films of Jean Rouch as the principal influence that ignited the entire Nouvelle Vague. The fusing together of fiction and documentary\, the use of handheld cameras\, shooting in the streets\, improvisation\, independence and nonlinear editing were principal aspects of his work that would be picked up by the so-called ‘young Turk’ filmmakers. \n\n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\nPlantage Doklaan 8-12\n20:30\nFree screening  \nDinners are available from 19:00\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays.

SUMMARY:Dok Night - Symbiopsychotaxicinema --> MEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT   1968
DESCRIPTION:18:00  Bar open  \n19:00 Vegan meals by Suzie Creamcheese \n20:30 film screening by SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA \n  \nMEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT   1968\n(Memorias del Subdesarrollo)\nDirected by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea\n104 minutes\nIn Spanish with English subtitles \n \nOnce upon a time there was an event called the “Bay of Pigs”—an attempted overthrow of the Cuban government by the American CIA. It ended in utter disaster for the Americans\, and caused the deaths of many Cubans. This semi-fictional movie made in Cuba\, starts up just after this fiasco\, and the constant threat of foreign invasion is still lingering in the air throughout the film. America’s attacks on Cuba should not be seen outside of the lens of colonization\, because that’s exactly how the country was founded – people throwing out foreign corporations that were exploiting them and taking back their own land. Curiously\, the only piece of Cuba still annexed by America is a place called Guantánamo Bay and it is still today being used as a torture chamber. \nWhat we have here is our main character Sergio\, an intellectual and an artist\, who remains aloof to the backdrop of the social events that are unfolding. He is more interested in women and art than politics. But nevertheless\, the post-revolutionary situation that was exploding in Cuba is the backdrop\, and is vividly documented. This brings up a theme that runs through many of Cuban director Alea’s films—the conflict between personal desire and social urgency. Absorbing influences from European cinema\, Alea’s style is free-wheeling – fusing fiction with documentary footage\, poetic images\, literary narration\, flashbacks and montages of 1960s life in Havana. \nThrough the story of Sergio’s life we also see the early revolutionary days of Cuba\, and the problems it faced. Sergio’s wife leaves him for a more secure life in the States\, as do many of his friends and neighbors. So this is a fiction film\, based on the book by Edmundo Desnoës\, that directly addresses the real situation in Cuba during the heat of explosive turmoil… and the amazing result seems surprisingly open and honest\, with a big question mark at the end about the future of Cuba. It’s considered by many to be the best Cuban film ever made\, and one of the greatest films of the 1960s new wave era that was sweeping through Latin America. \nThis will be a high-definition screening. \n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays.
