The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n  \n \nTHE WAR AT HOME   1979\nDirected by Barry Alexander Brown\, Glenn Silber\n100 minutes\nIn English \n  \nThis is such an important film\, a document from the past about social change. I’m often asked where I came from…. Well my whole life I was moving…. But the place I went to university was a city called Madison Wisconsin. During the late 60s and early 70s it was a hotbed of social and cultural unrest\, especially active in the strong anti-war movement. This documentary focuses on the counterculture movement in Madison\, and some of my teachers were even involved with the making of this film. \nOne of the beautiful aspects of this flick is in watching how a movement that begins with only a few hundred people\, grew into a mass movement. We see the numbers grow\, and we also see the police\, even the army\, being brought in to handle the situation. The Madison university campus became a battleground. The film also debates the issue of violence\, and whether violence should be used in an anti-war movement. Along the way we have some great music from that time\, and some major players in the field including the beat poet Allen Ginsberg. It was a groundbreaking film when it hit the movie screens\, and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1980. Personally\, I think it is crucial viewing for anyone who wants to create real direct-democratic change\, no matter what issue is being addressed. \nBy the way\, the co-director Barry Alexander Brown would later go onto editing several Spike Lee joints such as Do the Right Thing. \nI’m not a fan of Micheal Moore\, but he did say this was one of the most important movies ever made. \nWhat can I say? DESCRIPTION:OPENING EXPOSITIE LANDSCHAPSLIJNEN\ndubbelexpositie van Annelinde de Jong en Suzanne Glerum\n\nSuzanne Glerum en Annelinde de Jong presenteren tijdens deze dubbelexpositie Landschapslijnen gezamenlijk hun werk in de etalage van woon- werkpand Plantage Dok en in het atelier van Suzanne Glerum.\nSuzanne Glerum toont olieverfschilderen en Annelinde de Jong ruimtelijke papieren objecten. \nZe vinden elkaar in hun omgang met de materie waarmee ze werken\, maar ook hun werkproces toont overeenkomsten. Voor allebei begint het werkproces buiten. Ze trekken eropuit\, het landschap in. Buiten verrichten ze ieder op eigen wijze veldwerk. In het landschap zet Suzanne Glerum de eerste lijnen in haar schetsboek. Niet om het landschap letterlijk weer te geven\, maar om het gevoel van in het landschap zijn te vangen. Annelinde de Jong verzamelt het landschap op een letterlijke manier: op verschillende buitenlocaties verzamelt ze plantaardig materiaal. Terug in het atelier dienen de schetsen als uitgangspunt voor de schilderijen. When he arrived in France\, he encountered racism immediately as a worker at a Citroen car factory\, and later on the docks of Marseille. When he was inspired to make movies he tried to get into the film school in Paris which rejected him\, probably for racial reasons\, so he went to study cinema in Moscow instead\, where he was accepted. Directly after making an international splash with his biting debut Black Girl (1966)\, he began working on this movie in his homeland of Senegal. As I mentioned\, he was also a writer\, and here he takes one of his short stories and conjures up this Kafkaesque flick about postcolonial bureaucracy set in West Africa. \nIt follows the story of a Senegalese man who has some cash sent to him from Paris\, which might seem like an easy task\, but in the hands of Sembène it ends up being a wild critique of the modernized world and how money functions in society. But let’s be clear\, although this film is about a nightmare\, it carries with it a breezy sense of humor\, warmth and absurdity—it’s a razor sharp satire\, but with a deep humanitarian edge. \nThis will be a high-definition screening. \nFree screening.

Let’s grow our brains together as we discuss hot topics in our Fossil Free Agriculture Campaign. We are ready to get cozy and dive deep into the first of four reading group topics\, and we need your help to foster a rich co-learning environment!  \n\n\n\n\nFor this session\, we will focus on the role of gas in industrial agriculture. How many fossil fuels are actually in our food? How does this industry continue to grow under the radar? Together we investigate how fossil fuels\, and increasingly gas\, are deeply engrained in the food system. We will provide a list of materials in different formats to prepare for the meeting\, such as articles\, information videos\, zines\, podcasts\, etc.\, so you can engage with the topic according to your capacity and interests. To help us create an interesting discussion and learn about these topics together\, we will aim to include someone outside of ASEED with particular knowledge on the given topic. DESCRIPTION:18:00\nVegan Moroccan Food by Hafid\n***\n20:00\nPoppe & Nemeth presenteren\nHIPPIES FROM HELL\ndocumentaire van Ine Poppe en Sam Nemeth uit 2001 \n  \n \nStart 20:00 / 53 min. \nIne Poppe en Sam Nemeth tonen op hun eerste Dokavond (de tweede is donderdag 9 februari) de gerestaureerde versie van de legendarische documentaire Hippies from Hell uit 2001. De film is een portret van de gemeenschap achter Nederlands’ eerste echte internetprovider XS4all. Uitgebreid komt de generatie hackers aan het woord die het blad Hacktic publiceerde. De subcultuur is rond 2000\, toen de film werd gedraaid\, net aan het eerste moment van reflectie toe. De roerige eerste decennia van de digitale revolutie zijn achter de rug en er wordt door een aantal mensen de balans opgemaakt. De documentaire werkt toe naar het hackerfestival HAL (Hackers at Large) in 2001\, waar alle draadjes bij elkaar komen. \nHippies from Hell beleeft na de presentatie op het IDFA in 2002 een opmerkelijke geschiedenis. Opdrachtgever VPRO wil hem aanvankelijk om onopgehelderde redenen niet uitzenden. Daarna eist Ine in de onderhandelingen die erop volgen het auteursrecht op. De VPRO gaat daar uiteindelijk mee akkoord. Vervolgens wordt HFH de eerste Europese film die officieel een Creative Commons licentie krijgt\, persoonlijk door CC initiatiefnemer Lawrence Lessig uitgereikt. De VPRO organiseert rond 2010 een digitale docu-reeks en wil dan alsnog HFH uitzenden (maar moet dan betalen voor het uitzenden van hun eigen productie). \nHippies from Hell is in de beginjaren via de server van de Waag downloadbaar geweest en in die vorm rond de 2 miljoen keer bekeken. Daarna is de documentaire op diverse manieren gepirateerd\, ondanks de CC licentie. Nog in 2022 moesten we Journeyman film -tevergeefs- sommeren de film niet meer te verkopen onder de naam Hackers from Hell via Amazon. Journeyman doet dat nog steeds\, in de US\, waar ze voor het Europees recht lastig te bereiken zijn. \nThe exhibition Landschapslijnen is on display till February 2nd 2023.

DESCRIPTION:We’re happy to welcome back Julia Reidy and Frö for a night of sci-fi folk music. \nCritics have described Julia Reidy‘s music as “properly singular\,” blending “immense knowledge of American primitive folk music with microtonal experimentalism and abstract pop vocalizing.” Reidy’s work has been compared to a range artists\, from Hope Sandoval and Talk Talk to Jim O’Rourke and Tashi Wada Group\, while ultimately remaining distinct. Frö makes experimental electronics with haunting vocals\, “going from femme-folk to post-internet information-overload.” Her fascination lies in the voice as the body’s given instrument\, one we always carry with us.  Join us for this special show at Dokzaal\, MOLK Factory on February 3rd. \n  \nTickets are free for Subbacultcha members and €15\,- for non-members. Norman White\, een van oorsprong Amerikaanse kunstenaar die al sinds de seventies vanuit Toronto opereert was een van de pioniers van wat hij zelf ‘robot-kunst’ noemt. \nWhite gaf naast zijn kunstpraktijk tot 2016 les aan Radio Television Arts Department of Ryerson University\, Toronto\, Ontario \nThem Fucking Robots graaft in White’s geschiedenis en laat diverse collega-kunstenaars en kunsthistorici aan het woord. We zien Norman White uitgebreid in zijn werkplaats in Durham\, Ontario. Ook spreken de makers met kunstenaars die hij les heeft gegeven of door hem beïnvloed zijn. \nThem Fucking Robots is een indringend project van een onafhankelijke geest die een generatie kunstenaars opleidde die inmiddels overal op de wereld hun invloed laten gelden.

The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n  \n \nCAIRO STATION 1958\n(باب الحديد )\nDirected by Youssef Chahine\n77 minutes\nIn Arabic with English subtitles \n  \nWhen this movie was made it opened up what was possible in Egyptian cinema. The kinds of movies made in Egypt during this period were mostly light\, upbeat romantic comedies. This film showed another side of Egypt and humanity in general… a dark sensual side that almost embodies a kind of madness. This flick is certainly about eroticism\, but is also about the perilous predicament of any outcast\, anyone excluded from society. It is also a snapshot of Egypt going through massive social change\, with Egyptian rock n’ roll entering the picture at one point\, along with feminist gangs demonstrating before news reporters. \nThe story is about many different characters at the teeming Cairo train station… but at the same time it focuses on the lives of several key players. The main one is a poverty-stricken newspaper seller named Qenawi who lives in a ramshackle shack/hut. This guy has gone a bit nuts\, and surprisingly is played by the director himself in a totally lunatic performance. Director Chahine has a wicked ability to enter human psychology\, with the sharpness of a scalpel. I have personally become skeptical whenever someone talks about ‘human nature’ as if it can be totally separated from the society and culture it developed in. I’m not sure\, but it seems to me Chahine came to the same conclusion. \nThe dazzling visuals of the film is a beautiful fusion of neo-realism and film noir. The mood is mostly bright\, but can suddenly switch on a dime\, without any expectation\, from light to dark and vice versa. It is a film that documents how the poor survive\, forced into petty crime and always being chased by the police… but it also emerges as a cutting edge thriller about repression in general—not only of the lower classes\, but also the repression of sexuality\, and of women through male violence. \n\n\n\nStart 20:30\nFree screening

DESCRIPTION:Hessel Moeselaar presents Mengelmoes: colourful and dynamic soundscapes \nMengelmoes is a program that I developed in 2022. It is a solo project where the viola is combined with synthesizers and live electronics\, creating a kaleidoscope of melancholic and colourful soundscapes. \nI love introducing the viola to the audience in a unique and experimental way\, whilst simultaneously bridging the gap between different styles of music. Besides classical and electronical elements\, my music also consists of elements of minimal music; ambient music; Arabic music\, and cinematic music. All in all\, it’s a mishmash of different music styles and sounds. \nMengelmoes has taken place at numerous festivals and locations\, such as Grachtenfestival\, Splendor Amsterdam and Lavafest. \nWith this project I was also given the opportunity to create the music of the eight-part Youtube documentary series ‘KiKa Stories’ by KiKa (the Dutch childhood cancer foundation)\, which sheds a light on different aspects of childhood cancer. The documentary was released in September of 2022. \n  \n \n

The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n  \n \nTHE MOON OVER THE ALLEY  1975\nDirected by Joseph Despins\n107 minutes\nIn English \nWow\, this is one hell of an odd bird that’s unlike anything else I’ve ever seen\, and it really shines because of it. Set deep in the Notting Hill district of 1970s London\, it follows the lives of several residents of varied racial and cultural backgrounds who live in a boarding house. It is an incredible depiction of the times…  we see then-crumbling\, then-affordable\, gritty London matched to an outrageously varied music score reflecting its multiculturalism. The music shifts as the locations change\, from Jamaican calypso pop through glam rock to folk and reggae. Its amazing\, but in fact\, the haunting music score was created by composer Galt McDermot\, legendary for his 60s musical ‘Hair’. It is through these spiritual torch ballads that our characters sing of their dreams\, and their hope to break through the harsh world around them. \nSo it’s the combination of this musical aspect\, fused with the gritty black and white cinematography\, that makes for such a wild and unimaginable concoction. It smashes all stereotypes and genres. We follow the main characters as they try to survive in the streets of London\, full of urban violence\, racism\, demonstrations—with these events punctuated by music. It was shot on a low budget (which allowed the director more freedom to play and experiment)\, and has a wild made-on-the-streets vibe. The Moon over the Alley is a bizarre “kitchen-sink musical” that borders on the surreal\, a well crafted flick that when seen today feels like discovering a buried treasure. \nThis will be a high-definition screening. \nFree screening. \n

Hosted in collaboration with The Rest is Noise. \nJerusalem in My Heart consists of Montréal-based producer and musician Radwan Ghazi Moumneh and Montréal-based filmmaker Erin Weisgerber. The duo will provide “an immersive sonic and visual live experience and an evolving effort to forge a modern experimental Arabic music wed to hand-made visuals using analog 16mm film at site-specific screen installations.” Have a listen to their latest album Qalaq\, which is shaped by a “dismantled orchestra” of musical collaborations with Tim Hecker\, Lucrecia Dalt and Moor Mother among others. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n  \n \nIN GEFAHR UND GROßTER NOT BRINGT \nDER MITTELWEG DEN TOD  1974 \n(In Danger and Deep Distress the Middle-way Spells Certain Death) \nDirected by Alexander Kluge and Edgar Reitz\n86 minutes\nIn German with English subtitles \n\nThese kinds of movies coming from Europe in the 60s and 70s have an openness and fundamental playfulness that can’t be found in cinema today. What happened? At what point did everything become so straight-laced\, uptight and unimaginative? The answer is that the cinema changed according to the dictates of society\, and after the leftist movements were crushed\, the only narrative that existed was right-wing and corporate. \nThis movie loosely focuses on two women living in West Germany. One woman steals men’s wallets to survive\, and the other is a spy for the East German government. But don’t expect a thrilling suspense drama here… instead this is more a movie about the public sphere\, about how our society works. We watch our two characters as they try to survive in a male dominated world\, and the editing creatively juggles narrative fiction with documentary. For example\, mixed in with the narrative we see real-life attacks of the police on students\, along with the eviction of an occupied building in Frankfurt am Main. There are potshots taken at stuffiness on both sides of the Berlin wall\, for example our East-German spy is reprimanded because her spy reports are more like poetry than dry factual documents. Obviously she has a different idea of truth than the state officials. \nIt was directed by the leading figure of the New German Cinema Alexander Kluge\, but strangely enough it was co-directed with Edgar Reitz\, who would later create the famous Heimat series. In the end\, it is another wonderful snapshot of a different era\, opening up possibilities that we could be embracing today. \n\n\nFree screening

The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world. \n  \nNOTRE NAZI   (1984) \n \nOur Nazi\nDirected by Robert Kramer\n116 minutes\nIn French and German with English subtitles \nThis is one of the most compelling documentaries that you have never heard of. It’s pretty difficult to frame this film properly because it’s a bit like those wooden Russian Matryoshka dolls—one hidden inside each other. Here is a try. There was once a German filmmaker named Thomas Harlan who made an amazing movie called Wundkanal: Execution in Four Voices.  For the film he hires an elderly man to be an actor\,who plays a character of an elderly man who was a Nazi\, and who is kidnapped by left-wing RAF terrorists. The terrorists take the elderly man\, tie him to a chair and interrogate him. \nThe next Matryoshka doll: The elderly man is played by Alfred Filbert\, who took the acting job for money. But it turns out he was an actual Nazi criminal himself during the Third Reich\, and was in fact one of the nine men in Hitler’s inner circle who planned the holocaust. He was a SS officer who also devised a way killing thousands of Russians in a special way—he would make their lives unbearable\, both physically and psychologically\, and then leave a loaded gun next to them so they would kill themselves voluntarily. It was called ‘manipulated suicide’. He was sentenced to life in prison for it in 1963\, but released after twelve years. As the movie goes on\, the story explodes more and more\,… blurring the line between the fictional story of a Nazi officer\, and the actual Nazi war criminal who is supposed to be acting. What ends up happening is Filbert is being put on trial before the camera\, without any idea of what he was getting himself into. Got me so far? \nAnd here is the next Matryoshka doll: The film we will be showing—Notre Nazi—is a documentary that was made during the shooting of the above mentioned movie Wundkanal\, and it pushes the situation even further. It is absolutely riveting to watch this confronting situation unfold. Notre Nazi was directed by exiled American filmmaker Robert Kramer\, who was living in Paris. What we get is an amazing situation\, but Kramer then adds another layer by questioning the entire film process\, revealing how we are easily manipulated by cinema—by what we are shown and what we aren’t. There are still quite a few more hidden Matryoshka dolls in this amazing flick\, but it’s best to let them unravel for themselves. As director Robert Kramer himself described the shooting\, once the camera started going it released a whole torrent of unpredictable energy that swept the set\, and even more than the set. \nThis will be another ultra-rare screening of a criminally neglected cinematic gem.
