SUMMARY:Dok Night - SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA Presented by Jeffrey Babcock
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday there’s a Vegan Dinner accompanying an exhibition opening/closing\, a live performance\, live music\, movie screening or … Come meet other people interested in art and activism\, good food and great prices. Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar.\n18:00 Bar open\n19:00 Vegan Ethiopian Dinner by Moknen\n20:30 \nSOLEIL Ô   1967\n(Oh\, Sun)\nDirected by Med Hondo\n104 minutes\nIn French and Arabic\, with English subtitles \nOf course colonialism and racism are not jokes\, but that makes it even more surprising when a director from Africa can make a comic farce making fun of the situation. But that goes to show that if we take any issue so deadly seriously\, then we have already lost the battle because we’ve given up our imagination and creativity. Born in Aïn-Béni-Mathar\, Morocco and raised in Mauritania\, Med Hondo was one of the first directors from the African continent – along with Ousmane Sembène from Senegal – to make movies that hit back against colonialism in general\, and specifically France. \nWhen a young man from Mauritania iImmigrates to Paris\, at first he is overjoyed\, Paris was always a dream city that he looked up to as the epitome of culture and glamour. The minute he arrives though\, he is faced with the difficulty of finding a way to survive. Everything across-the-board is against him\, from the Catholic Church to pedestrians on the street\, to the economic situation and political system. Racism is everywhere\, even with the simplest of things. Some of the humor of this flick comes from just watching the hypocrisy of this so-called civilised liberal Parisian society. Some of the scenes in the streets even seem as if they were shot in a documentary guerrilla filmmaking way – staging a situation on a street corner and then just letting the camera roll\, catching people’s reactions. But there is indeed a story\, which unfolds in a freewheeling fashion – sometimes with a delirious joie de vivre… Including the soundtrack\, which is so playfully experimental and irreverent at times that it becomes hilarious. This is not a cinema that is designed to suck you into an illusionary reality\, instead here cinema is treated like raw material… which is an approach that’s much more honest and free. The playfulness of Hondo’s filmmaking has such a feeling of liberation and freshness. \nThe film shows that real emancipation is not only economic\, but the fundamental crux is actually psychic… and that’s what needs to be released. How to get rid of an entire era of subjugation\, injustice\, humiliation and degradation? How can one move on without recognition of that history? The absurdity of our main character’s situation becomes almost hysterical\, and the film builds up to an unnerving climax which is almost a battle cry. The director claims that the movie is semi-autobiographical. \nDirector Med Hondo was acting in theatres while he lived in Paris\, scraping together his extra pennies each month to buy the film stock to shoot this movie. That’s why it took him three years to make it\, shooting only on the weekends when his friends were free to help along. The technical crew consisted of only five people\, all volunteers. That’s what we need today\, not just an easier lifestyle and more convenience…. but also a spirit of passion and determination. Music is an important element and it weaves through the film\, from drum percussion to singing live in cafés with an acoustic guitar. Some of the people that contribute to the music track are the legendary Indian tabla player Jean-Paul Drouet\, the modern jazz of Michel Portal\, the Congolese group Les Black Echos and Cameroonian musician Georges Anderson. \n\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA\n\n\nPresented by Jeffrey Badcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world.\n  \n

SUMMARY:Dok Night - Benefit Dinner olijfoogst in de West Bank by Het Laatste Avondmaal
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday there’s a Vegan Dinner accompanying an exhibition opening/closing\, a live performance\, live music\, movie screening or … Come meet other people interested in art and activism\, good food and great prices. Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar.\n  \n\n18u bar open\nca. 19u Benefit Dinner by Het Laatste Avondmaal / 3-course vegan meal on a donation basis\nVanavond benefiet voor de olijfoogst in de West Bank in oktober. \n  \nEN IN DE DOKZAAL: \n\n18u – 22u\nThe Beachcomber and Leviathan\nVideo installation by Tamar Kaufman\nMusic by Kaï Doulbehante Humpleby

SUMMARY:Subbacultcha presents: Milkweed
DESCRIPTION:Encounter the slacker-trad folklore of Milkweed’s formula of existing source material\, cut up words\, and lo-fi and experimental sound productions\, this October at Dokzaal. \nMilkweed describe their sound as slacker-trad\, which is both true and somehow insufficient. For three years Milkweed have refined a formula – taking existing source material (a folklore journal\, a book on Welsh myths\, another on bronze age human remains and most recently Thomas Kinsella’s masterfully stark translation of the Táin Bó Cúailnge)\, cutting up the words and feeding them through a woodchipper of lo-fi production and experimental folk music. \nOn the face of it their musical concerns are transatlantic – they follow the rich creative line that runs between British traditional music and the songs and tunes of the eastern United States. In reality their scope is global\, and rooted in deep time\, with influences from prehistory bleeding into a troubled and troubling modern era. As a result their music doesn’t sit easily anywhere\, but ricochets between bewitching folk music and disconcerting hauntological experimentation. \n<a href=”https://milkweedfolk.bandcamp.com/album/remsc-la-2″>Remscéla by Milkweed</a> \nThis is a Subbacultcha original show. Please make a reservation by sending an email to mailinglist@subbacultcha.nl with ‘Milkweed’ in the subject line + your name in the email. Registrations are open until 12PM on weekdays.  \nThis show is kindly supported by Fonds Podium Kunsten\, AFK and Cultuurfonds.

SUMMARY:MY SWEET LITTLE VILLAGE 1985 Directed by Jiří Menzel
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday there’s a Vegan Dinner accompanying an exhibition opening/closing\, a live performance\, live music\, movie screening or … Come meet other people interested in art and activism\, good food and great prices. Bring your favourite game and your friends. Or meet new people at the bar.\n18:00 Bar open\n19:00 Vegan Dinner\n20:30 SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICINEMA \nMY SWEET LITTLE VILLAGE   1985\n(Vesnicko má stredisková)\nDirected by Jiří Menzel\n98 minutes\nIn Czech with English subtitles \n \nSome of the most crucial things missing from modern cinema are: atmosphere\, magic and a deep sense of humanity. Most movies today replace these qualities with cheap sentimentality\, sensationalism\, cgi effects\, big budgets\, histrionics\, crazy stories\, sequels and worn-out genre formulas. When a director really follows their instincts they will never end up with a formula\, the uniqueness of the experience will undermine such stereotypes and always wander into uncharted territory. \nDirected by the great Jiří Menzel (Closely Watched Trains) this comedy is about a small Czechoslovakian town… in particular a guy named Pavel who is taking care of Otik\, the local “village idiot”. Pavel feeds him and gives him a job as an assistant on his dump truck. But times are changing. The modern world is invading and smashing the old ties of the village\, and Otik is now seen as a dysfunctional pain-in-the-ass. This bittersweet film captures that crucial turning point\, hinting at the oncoming loss of community and solidarity as Czechoslovakia starts shifting towards a ‘western’ consumer culture\, which will be actualised four years later with the so-called Velvet Revolution. In other words\, this flick would insightfully predict the country’s future. It  weaves us through village life\, and has that wonderful Czech summer vibe… flirting\, romances\, and a natural sense of poetry. Seen today it feels like a fresh breeze from an unknown world. \nThis is a beloved movie in its homeland\, but practically unknown anywhere else. It transports you to another time and place\, a simpler era before the onslaught of globalization and corporatization. Believe it or not\, in communist Czechoslovakia people didn’t suffer from a plague of widespread hyper-anxiety\, adhd\, burn-outs\, depression\, addiction and stress—as so many do today… you would think the opposite when you hear so many scary stories about the former East Bloc and so many wonderful ones about our own Stepford Wife consumer utopia. This movie taps into the lyricism of Czech culture and its razor-sharp sense of black humor… and documents a simpler and more open existence when people still cared for each other no matter how difficult and time-consuming that might be. \n\npresented by Jeffrey Babcock\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thursdays. Touching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racism\, education\, radical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrification\, these films not only explore visionary politics\, but are also chosen to stir our imagination and creativity. The essence of cinema is the collective experience\, and these screenings are aimed at creating intimate communities again in an increasingly hectic and fragmented world.

SUMMARY:TOGETHER FOR GAZA
DESCRIPTION:TOGETHER FOR GAZA \nOn October 31st\, Nour Foundation and Fragments of Palestine are organizing a special day in solidarity with the people of Palestine — from Gaza\, the West Bank and the Palestinian diaspora. \nA day filled with culture\, dance\, music\, food and meeting one another\, alongside an indoor market where authentic Palestinian products and goods will be available for sale. \nThrough this day\, we want to show our solidarity with the people of Palestine\, while also supporting those here who share their voices\, talents and stories. We bring together culture\, stories and talent\, while creating a space to meet\, connect\, share and celebrate. \nTogether\, we acknowledge what is happening there\, but above all\, we stand alongside the people affected\, here and there. \nTICKETS AVAILABLE HERE \n3\,50 market [kids under 12 free] \n29\,95 dinner [including market] \n15\,00 take away dinner [including market] \n_____________________________________ \n14:00 — Market Opening \nThe afternoon begins with Nour el-Nono\, founder of the Nour Foundation\, opening our Palestinian market. Browse authentic products from the West Bank\, including olive oil\, dates\, and ceramics from Fairtrade Palestine\, alongside handmade accessories by Mary Ann Jaraisy. Get henna painting by Tahiera & Nazierah\, and let your children enjoy our Kids Corner\, where they can make bracelets\, paint\, and learn about Palestinian culture. \nA short video will be shown during the market\, highlighting the Nour Foundation’s ongoing projects on the ground in Gaza. \nAlso a small photo exhibition (from private collection of Nour el-Nono and her family) highliting the differences of their life before and after the year 2023. \n14:30–16:30 — Music & Shopping \nDJ Shadow spins Arabic music while you shop\, browse the market\, and enjoy drinks at the bar. \n16:30-16:50 — Stand-up comedy performance \nFaris Abusada is a Palestinian comedian living in Amsterdam. Hailing from Bethlehem\, his comedy blends personal experiences with cultural and political insights\, offering a unique perspective on Palestinian life. Known for addressing family expectations\, cultural identity\, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict\, Faris brings both humor and thoughtfulness to his performances\, bridging cultural gaps and shedding light on important issues. \n17:30–18:30 — Dabke Performance & Workshop \nWatch a live demonstration of dabke\, traditional Middle Eastern dance\, followed by an interactive workshop led by Dabke Night — all welcome to join in. \n19:00 — Palestinian Dinner \nThe evening closes with a traditional Palestinian dinner\, prepared and served by Chef Nour\, accompanied by music. \nAll market proceeds go directly to individual families and community projects in Gaza and the Occupied Territories. Proceeds from the dinner and pick-up boxes support Nour Foundation’s work with Gaza’s most vulnerable communities. \nCome connect\, share stories\, and stand together. Let’s never stop talking about Palestine — and never stop supporting its people\, wherever they are. \nNour Foundation (BE) and Stichting Fragments of Palestine (NL) were founded by Nour el-Nono and Lenka Pollak in 2025 after working together on ground projects in Gaza. \nNour Foundation relies entirely on donations raised through events like this\, with 100% of all contributions going directly to Gaza\, ensuring that support reaches families and communities who need it the most. \nStichting Fragments of Palestine works closely with Nour Foundation and supports projects in Gaza\, but also Palestinians living in diaspora. We generate funds by selling Palestine Drinks (@palestinedrinks) en other related products\, like merchandise. \nFollow us on Instagram: \n@together.for.gaza.benefit \n@nour_foundation_ \n@fragments.of.palestine \n@ahmed.pollak \n@chef.nourelnono
